Women’s Role In The Church
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesA querist asks, “My question is regarding that of leadership. There are churches that see nothing wrong in women’s role as a leader in the church. For example, women taking on the role of Sunday school teacher, worship leader, minister, etc. I would like to know what the position of the Church Of Christ is on the leadership of women?”
The “position” of the churches of Christ regarding the leadership of women is exactly the same as the teaching of the inspired Scriptures. Women are instructed not “to teach or to exercise authority over a man” (1 Timothy 2:12 ESV) in the Lord’s church (1 Corinthians 14:34 ESV). The King James Version uses the phrase, “usurp authority over” (Strong’s 831).
The inspired writer Paul, emphatically states in 1 Timothy 2:12 ESV, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.” Paul again states in 1 Corinthians 14:33-34 ESV, “….. As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.”
