Discussion: What happened when Jesus died on the cross?
I. What was the Motivation?
1. The Love of God for sinners, John 3:16.
2. While we were still sinners, Rom. 5:8; Isa. 59:1-2; Rom. 6:23.
3. The kindness of God, Tit. 3:4.
4. The kind of love that takes action, 1 John 4:9-10, 19.
II. What was the Purpose?
1. That we might be reconciled to God, 2 Cor. 5:19-21; Luke 19:10; Isa. 53:5.
2. To be the propitiation for our sins, Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2; 4:10; Heb. 9:5 (mercy seat same in Greek as propitiation); Exod. 25:17; Lev. 16:15; v. 30 (LXX rendering of mercy seat same as previous NT examples).
Jesus, as propitiation was sacrifice, priest, and place of atonement.

Conclusion: What happened when Jesus died on the cross?
