“Wait Silently For God Alone”

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The origin of the phrase “silence is golden” is unknown, but its sentiments are much needed in our society today as we live in a very noisy world.

Many folks can’t even drive without music blaring from their car, or the beat of the bass section vibrating their vehicle. Unfortunately, many denominational church services are marked more by noise than by quiet reflection.

In ancient times, the pagans cried out in a noisy frenzy to their idols (cf. 1 Kings 18:25-29). In sharp contrast, the Psalmist saw the wisdom of silence, because in quiet reverence God can be heard (Psalm 62:1-8). In the stillness of the night under a starry sky — in a hushed sanctuary, in a quiet room at home, or in the quiet recesses of our mind, we can meet the living God and hear Him speak through His word.

The Psalmist’s words are just as relevant today as they were over three thousand years ago when they were written: “My soul, wait silently for God alone” (Psalm 62:5).
