SUBJECT: Sin

TITLE: Thou Shalt Not Follow A Multitude To Do Evil…

INTRODUCTION: Read Exo. 23:2

1. The history of Israel is rife with incidences where individuals followed the wrong leader.

1) The murmuring of the spies, Nu. 13-14

2) Korah, Dathan and Abiram, Nu. 16.

3) The Injustice of Naboth, 1 Ki. 21

4) The Insurrection of Absalom, 2 Sam. 15

2. New Testament accounts are not immune…

1) Crowds of Jerusalem

a. Shouted Hosannah, Matt. 21:9, 15.

b. Shouted crucify, Mark 15:11.

2) The problem with Judaizing teachers.

a. Peter, Gal. 2:11-12.

b. Barnabas, Gal. 2:13

3) Stoning of Stephen, Acts 7.

3. Written for our learning, Rom. 15:4.

DISCUSSION: Today we have a problem with…

I.   Families who think they know better than God.

1. They teach their children to sew their wild oats in their youth.

2. That it’s OK if they drink at family gatherings. Safe, responsible.

3. Evil is evil even when done among family.

1) Train up a child…, Pro. 22:6.

2) Remember… days of thy youth, Ecc. 12:1.

3) Be an example, 1 Tim. 4:12.

4) Flee youthful lusts, 2 Tim. 2:22.

5) Yes, children ought to obey their parents, Eph. 6:1-3, but we ought to obey God first, Acts 5:29; Matt. 6:33.

II.  Many follow a denomination because it’s popular.

1. Follow Baptist doctrine. (can 40 million Baptists be wrong?)

2. Follow the majority of scholars.

3. Follow Catholic doctrine. (there are 1.2 billion Catholics.) Remember the ark.

4. I invite you to follow Jesus, John 14:15; 15:14.

1) He’ll be your judge, after all, John 12:48; Matt. 10:28

2) He gave His word to the apostles, John 17:8; John 14:26.

3) Follow the apostles who confirmed the word, Mark 16:20; Heb. 2:3-4; 1 Cor. 14:37; 2 Pet. 3:2.

III. Many follow the world for pleasure’s sake.

1. God says NO to fornication. It is practically a given that you’ll be practicing. 1 Cor. 6:9-10; 1 Cor. 6:18; Gal. 5:19-21; Rom. 8:13; 1 Thess. 4:3; Heb. 13:4 (whoremongers = fornicators).

2. God says NO to alcohol, Eph. 5:18. Drunk is the operative word.

1) methusko – become intoxicated, get drunk

2) You have a place in your mind where someone is accounted drunk.

a. The place in your mind is subjective. Each of us may have a different definition.

b. God, however, is objective. The very definition.

c. Opinion doesn’t matter.

3) If you take one drink, you’re one drink drunk.

4) Lev. 10:9-10

CONCLUSION: Don’t follow anyone in doing evil

1. There is a passage that truly illustrates the follow of following others in doing evil, Matt. 7:13.

2. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that, because of past decisions, it’s done, that nothing can be done.

3. For Christians there is an exception, Luke 13:3, 5; Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:7-9.

4. If you’re not a Christian, the folly of past sins can be removed by the blood of Christ, Matt. 26:28; Acts 2:38; 22:16.
