The Truth About Infant Baptism
Categories: Bible Questions and Answers Tags: Bible Lessons on BaptismIf the steps to salvation are understand, believe, confess, repent and be baptized… does that mean that if these steps were done but not in that order that one will not find true salvation? Is infant baptism invalid?
Thanks for your question.
In order to be saved, one must follow the order of salvation that the scriptures set forward. Romans 10:14 tells us that the order is 1) preach, 2) hear, 3) believe, and 4) call upon the name of the Lord (baptism, Acts 22:16). Acts 2:38 tells us that repentance comes before baptism, and Romans 10:10 tells us that confession comes after belief.
But even if we didn’t have these scriptures, the order would make sense anyway. How can a person believe the gospel if they haven’t heard it? So one must hear first. Repentance is based upon belief. You don’t repent of something which you don’t believe to be true. Confession is based upon repentance. You don’t make a confession unless you have repented to the point that you are ready to make that confession. Finally, baptism is dependent upon all of these things. One can’t be baptized without hearing, believing, repenting, and confessing.
So, yes, the order is very important. Infant baptism is not valid, because it places belief out of order. It says that one doesn’t have to believe that Jesus died for our sins to be baptized. I would suggest you read the following online article regarding Mark 16:16. It should explain why infant baptism cannot provide for salvation.
