The Treasure of the King

1. Read: Colossians 2:1-10

2. About the Text:

1) The church at Colossae had a problem.

2) They were concerned that there could be something that they were missing.

3) Look at all the philosophies and religions of the world.

4) Is there not some wisdom and knowledge in them that we need?

5) Paul’s answer is “no.”

6) All of the treasure of wisdom and knowledge is in Christ Jesus.

7) Today we have those who promote multiculturalism.

8) They say that we should “Coexist” which is a buzzword to value all religions equally.

9) The answer today is still “no.”

10) There is nothing outside of Christ Jesus that we need.

3. God’s wisdom is revealed in Christ Jesus

1) “And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:1-2).

2) “However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory” (1 Corinthians 2:6-7).

4. God’s Knowledge is Revealed in Christ Jesus

1) “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him” (John 1:18).

2) John 14:9-11

5. Every important principle of living can be found in Christ Jesus.

1) “As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3).

2) “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

3) “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace” (James 3:17-18).

6. Application: Read and study the Bible! (Psalm 119:105 – “Thy word”)

3. Jesus Birth is the Treasure

1) “For unto us a Child is born, ??Unto us a Son is given; ??And the government will be upon His shoulder. ??And His name will be called ??Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, ??Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

2) “Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” (Luke 2:10-11).

4. Jesus Life is the Treasure

1) “for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15).

2) “Friend of Sinners” (Luke 7:34)

3) Isaiah 42:1-7 fulfilled in Matthew 11:4-6 and 12:20.

4) He healed the sick, stilled the storms, walked on the water, cast out demons, and raised the dead.

5. Jesus Death is the Treasure

1) “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

2) “But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (Galatians 6:14).

6. Jesus Resurrection is the Treasure

1) “But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him” (Mark 16:6).

7. Christ the King is our treasure! – Colossians 3:1 – “right hand of God.”

8. Application: We have a relationship with the greatest person who has ever lived.

3. Paul says that the world can cheat us out of what Christ has to offer.

1) Philosophy

2) Empty Deceit

3) Traditions of Men

4) Basic Principles of the World

5) “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8).

4. What will we get cheated out of?

1) Our joy

2) Our contentment

3) Our relationships

4) Our peace

5) Our love

6) Our salvation

5. The Christian is complete in Christ.

1) None of the other world religions or philosophies compare to Christianity.

2) Man’s wisdom can never surpass God’s wisdom.

3) There is nothing man can think that will surprise God.

4) “?’For My thoughts are not your thoughts, ??Nor are your ways My ways,’ says the LORD. ??‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, ??So are My ways higher than your ways, ??And My thoughts than your thoughts.’” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

6. Application: Do not love the world.

1) “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17).

2) “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8).

3) “both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).
