The Lord's Day

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The Lord’s Day is my tower of strength! It is the day of days for soul refreshment. In my moments of quiet meditation, I have often asked myself, “How long would strength remain in me and God’s reality remain in my heart, if it were not for the soul renewing worship of the Lord’s Day?” How wise my heavenly Father was to provide this day for His children.

As the Lord’s Day dawns and the hour of worship approaches, my hungry soul grows eager with anticipation. It is at this time that God has especially planned and provided soul food for my hungry and thirsty spirit (Matthew 5:6). The hour is too important to be consumed with the trivial and non-essential. It is not the time for entertainment.

I want to hear a life-giving and soul-saving message from God. I want instruction on how to overcome temptation, reassurance of God’s love and providence, and a brief glimpse again of the glory of the Father’s house.

I do not ask that the message be easy, only that it be true (John 17:17). Let God’s man [preacher] point my way to duty, and let me be wise enough to follow. Let the messenger lay bare my sins, and let me be humble enough to repent. And, oh my God, grant that Thy messenger may never lose the courage faithfully to rebuke my sin; otherwise, it might destroy me forever (Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 6:23; cf. James 1:15).

If there is sin in my life, may he know that he has not been true to my eternal interests until he has discovered it to me, and helped me to find cleansing.
