Sermon on Right Attitude - Right Attitude in Worship

Sermon on Right Attitude – Right Attitude in Worship – Sermon outline by Kevin Cauley on the proper attitude to have when worshiping God. From John 4:24.

PROPOSITION: To look at some principles in scripture that will help us examine our attitude in worship.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: John 4:24

2. About the Text:

1) Jesus speaks about worship in this passage.

2) He says that proper attitude in worshiping God occurs when we do so both in spirit and in truth.

3) When we worship according to the truth, we are worshiping with the right action.

4) When we worship according to spirit, we are worshiping with the right attitude.

5) Let’s talk for a few moments about the correct attitude in worship.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: To have the right attitude in worship, we must ask ourselves the question… [ discussion of this sermon on right attitude ]

I.   Why I am Here? This is the question of purpose.

1. Many purposes effect our attitude in worship.

1) Mom and Dad made me come.

2) To feel good about myself.

3) To socialize.

4) To be with family.

5) To catch up on the latest news.

6) To hear a good speech.

7) I once knew someone who said, “I don’t care what the sermon says, I just come for the singing.”

2. What should be our true purpose? To worship God.

1) We worship because God is worthy of our worship.

a. Psalm 18:3 says, “I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised.”

b. Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

c. 1 Chronicles 16:29 and Psalm 29:2 say, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”

2) We worship because we love God.

a. When we love someone, we give them our full attention at the appropriate times.

b. Matthew 22:37 “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” This at least includes worship.

3) Many other reasons to worship God.

a. Because He loves us. John 3:16

b. Because He is Holy. Psalm 99:5 “Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.”

c. Because He is good. Luke 18:19 “none is good, save one, that is, God”

d. Because He is true.

e. Because He is righteous.

f. Because He is just.

g. Because He is faithful.

4) These are all valid reasons.

3. What will result from our worship?

1) We will hear a good message.

2) We will feel good.

3) We will have fellowship.

4) We will enhance our relationship with God.

5) All of the positive things that one gets out of worship results from worshiping with the right attitude to begin with.

6) We cannot expect the blessings of worship without the right attitude in worship.

II.  How Can I Have the Correct Attitude in Worship? This is the question of focus.

1. Some pertinent questions.

1) When the worship is completed, do we really understand what we have done?

2) Are we focusing upon the leaders of worship or the message?

3) Do our own thoughts reflect what is going on in the worship?

2. Singing

1) Easy to let our minds wander.

2) Eph. 5:19 “making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

3) Colossians 3:16 “singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

4) Psalm 47:4 “For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.”

5) 1 Corinthians 14:15 “I will sing with the understanding also.”

3. Prayer

1) We should be focusing upon the words being prayed and praying that prayer in our own minds.

2) 1 Corinthians 14:15 “I will pray with the understanding.”

3) Prayer should exercise faith. Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

4) Do we believe the things for which we pray?

4. Bible Study

1) Perhaps most tempted to let our minds wander at this time.

2) But we must let God speak to us through studying His word.

3) Do we delight in the word of God? Psalm 1:2 “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

4) Romans 7:22 “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:”

5) Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

6) Colossians 3:16 says “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.”

5. Giving

1) 2 Corinthians 9:6, 7 “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly . . .”

2) 2 Corinthians 8:5 “And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.”

6. Lord Supper–1 Corinthians 11:23-28

III. What are the results of our attitude in worship? This is the question of behavior.

1. If we act wrong, we will have vain worship.

1) Our worship will be no better than that of the Pharisees. Jesus said concerning them, “In vain do you worship me.” Matthew 15:9

2) God rewards those who diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

2. If we act wrong, we will have Spiritual sickness.

1) It will detract from our own spiritual growth.

2) We will fail to grow. 1 Peter 2:1, 2 ” Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”

3. If we act wrong, we will have a Poor influence.

1) We will set a bad example for both our young people and newborn Christians.

2) We will distract others who are trying to worship.

3) We will turn away visitors and cause them to think that we are not serious about God’s worship.

4) The bottom line is that God will be displeased with us because we will FAIL to worship Him.

4. Don’t deceive yourself into thinking that you can talk, write notes, play around, or goof off during worship.

1) GOD KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

2) Everyone else knows too, whether you think they do or not.

3) You are the one who is being deceived when you have this kind of attitude in worship.

4) Remember what Paul wrote in Galatians 6:7, 8 “Be not deceived;…”
