The King’s Mission

1. Read: Colossians 1:19-29

2. About the Text:

1) God has been reigning as King since time began.

2) “For the LORD is the great God, And the great King above all gods” (Psalm 95:3).

3) His subjects were deceived by His enemy, and they rebelled against Him.

4) This Great King would not accept that and decided to get them back.

5) His mission was to redeem humanity.

6) How did the King get His kingdom back?

3. The book of Colossians is about the supremacy of Christ.

1) “…that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:18).

2) In Christ are “hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).

3) Christ is King and this is His story.

1. Colossians 1:19-22a

2. The need for reconciliation.

1) Adam and Eve sinned and plunged mankind into darkness.

2) Isaiah 59:1-2

3) “But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away” (Isaiah 64:6).

4) Sinful man cannot devise his own system of salvation.

3. God wants man to be saved.

1) “…desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4).

2) “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

4. Jesus came to save us when we could not save ourselves.

3) “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

5. His reconciliation is real because God accepted His sacrifice for sin.

1) “For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:10).

2) His reconciliation is based on . . .

a. Real forgiveness (Acts 5:31).

b. Real fellowship (1 John 1:3).

c. Real faithfulness (2 Thess.3:3).

3) “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

1. Colossians 1:22-23

2. To be holy, blameless, and above reproach in His sight is sanctification.

1) “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love” (Ephesians 1:4).

2) “that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians 5:26-27).

3) “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

3. We must continue in the faith.

1) John 8:31-32

2) “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love” (John 15:10).

3) “…Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10)

4. We must preach the gospel.

1) “For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16).

2) “For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5).

2. Live for the sake of the church.

1) Rejoice in Sufferings.

a. “So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His[fn] name” (Acts 5:41).

b. “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3).

2) Be a minister/steward.

a. “Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God” (1 Corinthians 4:1).

b. “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one?” (1 Corinthians 3:5).

3) Fulfill the word of God.

a. “Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:26-27).

3. Christ in You the Hope of Glory

1) Warning Every Man

a. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men…” (2 Corinthians 10:5-6).

b. “Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears” (Acts 20:31).

2) Present Every Man Perfect in Christ

a. “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13).

b. “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

3) To this end we labor.

a. “Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him” (2 Corinthians 5:9).

b. “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (2 Timothy 2:10).
