The Fifth Commandment – Honor Father and Mother
SUBJECT: Ten Commandments
TITLE: The Fifth Commandment – Honor Father and Mother
PROPOSITION:In this lesson we will study the fifth commandment, honor thy father and mother. We will notice what it means to 1) Render Honor 2) who the Recipients of Honor are in this commandment and 3) the Results of honoring father and mother.
OBJECTIVE: That each would understand what honoring father and mother entails.
Aim: That we would have a renewed respect for honoring our father and mother and not just the youth.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Exodus 20:1-17
2. About the Text:
1) In our study of the Ten Commandments we’ve looked at…
a. Idolatry and the priority that God demands in our lives.
b. The need to honor God’s name and keep it holy.
c. God’s requirement to Israel to remember the Sabbath.
2) Today we look at the fifth commandment.
3) This is the commandment to honor father and mother.
4) The first four commandments dealt with man’s relationship with God.
5) The last six deal with man’s relationship with man.
6) This is the beginning of these last six commandments.
7) This commandment is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:16 “Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”

DISCUSSION:
I. Rendering Honor
1. Respect
1) Leviticus 19:32 “Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.”
2) A good example in the book of Esther.
3) Remember how Mordecai was honored by Haman’s suggestion?
4) Esther 6:7-9 “And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delighteth to honour, Let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head: And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.”
5) 1 Peter 2:17 “Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”
2. Obey
1) Numbers 27:20 “And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him [Joshua], that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.”
2) 1 Timothy 6:1 “Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.”
3) 1 Peter 2:17 “Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”
3. Monetary Support
1) Proverbs 3:9 – “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:”
2) Romans 13:7 “Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.”
3) 1 Timothy 5:3 – “Honour widows that are widows indeed.”
4) 1 Timothy 5:17 “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”
4. Notice that honoring father and mother spans the age spectrum. It is not just for the youth.
II. Recipients of Honor – Father and Mother
1. Father and mother should be respected.
1) Exodus 21:15 “And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.”
2) Exodus 21:17 “And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.”
3) Leviticus 18:7 Their sexual relationship was to be respected and not violated.
4) Deuteronomy 27:16 “Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother.”
2. Father and mother should be obeyed.
1) Deuteronomy 21:18-21 prescribed the death penalty for rebellious children.
2) Proverbs 1:8 “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.”
3) Proverbs 6:20 “My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:”
4) Proverbs 30:17 “The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.”
5) Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.”
3. Father and Mother should be supported in their old age.
1) Study Matthew 15:1-6
2) Proverbs 28:24 “Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.”
III. Results of Honor
1. We honor God.
1) To appropriate honor father and mother is to honor God because God is the creator of the family (Genesis 2:18-25).
2) As a corollary, failure to honor father and mother is a failure to honor God’s creation.
3) Matthew 15:6 “Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.”
2. Long life is promised.
1) Proverbs 3:1-2 “My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”
2) Ephesians 6:1-3 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
3. To Israel was promised inheritance of land as well – Deuteronomy 5:16 “Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
CONCLUSION:
1. We’ve learned what it means to honor father and mother.
1) We’ve learned how to render honor.
2) We’ve learned the recipients of honor.
3) We’ve learned the results of honoring father and mother.
