The Beauty Of God's Law
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorizedLooking at all of the motorists who exceed the posted speed limit on our local freeway, makes me ask, “What in the world are they all in a hurry for?“ Long ago, I decided that driving within or under the posted speed limit, not only gives me a wonderful sense of freedom, but a peace of mind as well.
For one thing, I never have to constantly worry about getting caught by our local police, paying a fine for speeding, or worse yet, being involved in an auto accident.
In Romans 13:1-10, Paul addresses our responsibility to the authority of human government and to the law of God.
When we fully obey the governing authorities, we don’t have to fear punishment, and we gain a clear conscience by doing what is right (Romans 13:3,5).
Paul urged the brethren in Rome to give the governing authorities what was owed them, whether taxes, revenue, respect, or honor (Romans 13:7). But he went beyond human regulations when he wrote:
“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8).
While it is our duty to obey man’s law — it’s our privilege to fulfill God’s law by loving others. And the beauty of His law, is that it’s “the perfect law that gives freedom” (James 1:25 NIV) — the freedom to “press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14 ESV).
Let’s think about it!
