Some “One Another” Expressions

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorized

Central to Christianity, is a personal relationship between an individual and God (Matthew 22:36-37). A healthy and vital relationship with God, eliminates the sin that separates us from our loving Father (Isaiah 59:1-2). Obeying the command to love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, and mind, makes it possible for each of us to live in God’s presence, both now and forever.

God’s word tells us that our relationship with God is demonstrated through healthy relationships with other people (Matthew 22:39; cf. Romans 13:8-10; Gal. 5:13-14; James 2:8). Both Christians and non-Christians alike should be able to easily recognize our daily behavior as being godly and righteous. In our contacts with one another, our godliness should be evident.

With these thoughts in mind, let us note some of the “one another” expressions in the New Testament that reflect the newness of life we find in our walk with Jesus:

  • We are to be “members of one another” (Romans 12:5).
  • We are to be “kindly affectionate to one another” (Romans 12:10).
  • We are to “give preference to one another” (Romans 12:10).
  • We are to “love one another” (Romans 13:8; 1 Peter 1:22; 1 Peter 4:8).
  • We are to “be like-minded toward one another” (Romans 15:5).
  • We are to “receive one another” (Romans 15:7).
  • We are to “admonish one another” (Romans 15:14).
  • We are to “greet one another” (Romans 16:16).
  • We are to “have the same care for one another” (1 Corinthians 12:25).
  • We are to “greet one another with a holy kiss” (1 Corinthians 16:20).
  • We are to “through love serve one another” (Gal. 5:13).
  • We are to “bear one another’s burdens” (Gal. 6:2).
  • We are to “bear with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2).
  • We are to “submit to one another in the fear of God” (Ephesians 5:21).
  • We are to “edify one another” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
  • We are to “exhort one another daily” (Hebrews 3:13).
  • We are to “consider one another in order to stir up love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24).
  • We are to “confess our trespasses to one another” (James 5:16).
  • We are to “pray for one another” (James 5:16).
  • We are to “have compassion for one another” (1 Peter 3:8).
  • We are to “be hospitable to one another without grumbling” (1 Peter 4:9).
  • We are to “be submissive to one another” (1 Peter 5:5).
  • We are to “fellowship with one another” (1 John 1:7).

The biblical message is very clear. While our salvation is grounded in Jesus (Acts 4:12; cf. Acts 10:42), it is worked out in our relationships with others. Each of us must make certain that our “one another” behavior reflects our love and devotion to God and to our fellow Christian (1 John 4:20-21; cf. 1 John 2:4-6).
