SUBJECT: Worship

TITLE: Worship Part 2 — Studying Our Attitude in Worshiping God

PROPOSITION: We want to study our attitude of worship. In order to worship God correctly there are certain things that must be broken-1) Our preconceptions, 2) Our worldliness, 3) Our Hearts.

OBJECTIVES: Everyone should be able to understand that attitude of worship is equally important to God as action..

AIM: To impress upon the hearer the need to have to correct attitude in worshiping God.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Psalm 95:6,7 “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker: For he is our God, And we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day, oh that ye would hear his voice!” ASV 1901

2. About the Text:

1) We find in this verse the correct object of our worship – Jehovah.

2) We find in this verse the correct attitude of worship – prostrating ourselves before God.

3) We find in these verses the foundation for the correct action in worship – hearing His voice!

3. Read John 4:24

1) We find the correct object of worship – God who is a Spirit.

2) We find the correct attitude of worship – Worship in spirit.

3) We find the foundation for correct action in worship – Truth.

4. Definition of worship.

1) Literally the greek word (proskuneo) means “kissing toward one in reverence.”

2) “The reverent love and allegience accorded a diety.” American Heritage Dictionary

3) “To honor or reverence a divine being .” Websters.

4) “Make obeisance to the gods or their images” Liddel and Scott Classic Greek Lexicon

5) In the New Testament, those sole actions in which the Christian engages so as to specifically show reverence, obeisance, and honor unto God and his Son Jesus the Christ.

DISCUSSION: Our Attitude in Worshiping God Must Be Correct. In order to do this, we must break . . .

I.   Our Preconceptions–We are not just getting our ticket punched.

1. The Preconception of false sacrifice–Micah 6:6-8

2. The preconception of formalism–Colossians 2:20-23

3. The preconception of presumption-1 Samuel 15:13-23

II.  Our Lack of Focus–We must put aside all worldly concerns and focus on spiritual concerns.

1. We are to focus upon the spiritual. Colossians 3:1-4

2. We are to focus on faithfulness–We are to draw near in full assurance of faith. Hebrews 10:19-25

3. We are to focus and center ourselves on God. Matthew 14:27-33

III. Our Hearts–We must have the attitude of the broken and contrite heart.

1. These are the true sacrifices–Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

2. This is who God allows to dwell with Him–Isaiah 57:15

3. This is to whom God looks with favor–Isaiah 66:1, 2

4. This is where the praise of God rests–Romans 2:28, 29

CONCLUSION:

1. Our attitude in worshiping God must be correct. In order for us to have the right attitude, we must break ourselves. We must break our

1) Preconceptions.

2) Lack of Focus

3) Hearts

2. Invitation

1) Are you a faithful Christian this morning?

a. If not, your heart was once broken, but you have hardened it again.

b. Rebreak it this morning so the Lord will find you acceptable to Him.

2) If you are not a Christian this morning . . .

a. You need to break your heart in obedience to God’s word.

b. God’s plan is very simple.

a) Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing . . .”

b) Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible . . . .”

c) Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30).

d) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matthew 16:16).

e) Be Baptized for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:15,16).
