TITLE: The Unique Nature of God’s Family

PROPOSITION: The unique nature of God’s family involves a unique Home, Spirit, Future, Older Brother, Standard, Birth, and Father.

OBJECTIVES: The hearer should be able to list the seven “ones” of Ephesians 4:4-6 and explain how each relates to the unique nature of God’s family.

AIM: To study the unique nature of the parts of God’s family to come to the conclusion that the whole is unique as well.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Ephesians 4:4-6

2. About the Text:

1) Paul encourages the church at Ephesus to strive for unity.

2) To drive home how important unity is in the church, Paul gives as evidence seven doctrines the nature of which motivate the church to unity and uniqueness.

DISCUSSION: The unique nature of God’s family involves a unique . . .

I.   Home–One Body

1. This home has a unique identity–the church.

2. The home affords a unique relationship between its members-family.

3. This home has a unique purpose–to show forth God’s wisdom. (Ephesians 3:10-11).

II.  Spirit–One Spirit

1. His function in the Godhead is unique–to carry out God’s will.

1) Spirit moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2).

2) The Spirit guided the apostles into all truth–“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13)

2. He communicates in a unique manner–through the word. Ephesians 3:1-5; Jude 1:3 (once)

3. He brings a unique result to the church–unity. 1 Corinthians 12:12-14

III. Future–One Hope

1. Our future is based upon a unique truth–the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Acts 17:31 “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”

2. Our future involves a unique moment–the resurrection of the dead; 1 Thessalonians 4:13ff

3. Our future involves a unique meeting place–heaven; 2 Corinthians 5:1ff

IV.  Older Brother–One Lord (Hebrews 2:11-13)

1. He is a unique person–both God and man; Matthew 22:41-46

2. He lead a unique life–servitude; Philippians 2:5ff

3. He died a unique death–the death of the cross; Hebrews 9:12, 26-28.

V.   Standard–One Faith

1. It is uniquely inspired–by the breath of God; 2 Timothy 3:16

2. It contains a unique message–Salvation through Jesus Christ; John 20:30,31

3. It provides a unique plan for that salvation–by becoming righteous; Romans 1:16,17.

VI.  Birth–One Baptism

1. It is a unique birth–spiritual; John 3:1-7

2. It has a unique likeness–death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ; Romans 6:1ff

3. It has a unique consequence–forgiveness of sins; Acts 2:38

VII. Father–One God and Father of all.

1. He has unique authority; 1 Corinthians 15:27; 1 Corinthians 11:3

2. He has unique love; Romans 5:8, John 3:16

3. He has unique justice; Hebrews 12:29, 2 Corinthians 5:10,11

CONCLUSION:

1. These are all unique attributes of the family of God.
