TITLE: I Am The Resurrection and the Life
PROPOSITION: Jesus is the resurrection. Identifying Jesus in this way means that He is 1) The Son of God, 2) Powerful and Authoritative, 3) The bringer of hope, 4) The bringer of life, 5) The Promiser, 6) The Overcomer, 7) The Future.
OBJECTIVE: Each hearer will be able to grasp the significance of this claim, understand how it relates to us today, and relate how this affects our future.
AIM: I want to convincingly show that the history of the resurrection, our baptism, and the hope we have for the future should motivate each individual to more dedicated service in their life to the Christ.

DISCUSSION: [ discussion of this resurrection sermon outline ] Identifying Jesus as the resurrection identifies him as…
I. The Son of God
1. Only the Son of God could make such a claim.
2. John 11:27 “She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, {even} he that cometh into the world.”
3. John 9:35 “Dost thou believe on the Son of God?”
4. John 20:30-31
5. The resurrection of Lazarus from the dead substantiated His claim as the Son of God.
6. His own resurrection provides undeniable proof that He is who He says He is.
II. Powerful and Authoritative
1. Read John 11:39-45
1) There was no doubt concerning his own power in this act.
2) With great confidence and power Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.
3) Notice the great result-people acknowledged his authority.
2. With the same power, Jesus was resurrected. The same authority accompanies this power.
3. John 5:25-27 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself: and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.”
4. Peter preached of this power and authority in Acts 2:22-36.
5. Paul acknowledged this power in Philippians 3:8-11 “Yea verily, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ, and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, {even} that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith: that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed unto his death; if by any means I may attain unto the resurrection from the dead.”
III. The Bringer of Hope
1. John 11:25-26 “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
1) The dead live.
2) The living shall never die.
2. Acts 24:14-15 “But this I confess unto thee, that after the Way which they call a sect, so serve I the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets; having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and unjust.”
1) We have hope that we will be resurrected and that in that new form we will live forever with Christ.
2) 1 John 3:2 “Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is.”
3. Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 “But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
IV. The Bringer of Life
1. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” John 11:25
2. He brought new life to Lazarus.
3. He brings new life to those who put their trust in Him.
1) Romans 6:6-8 “knowing this, that our old man was crucified with {him}, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin; for he that hath died is justified from sin. But if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.”
2) Colossians 2:10 “and have put on the new man, that is being renewed unto knowledge after the image of him that created him:”
3) 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Wherefore if any man is in Christ, {he is} a new creature: the old things are passed away; behold, they are become new.”
4. He brings eternal life to those who believe on him.
1) John mentions eternal life more than any other gospel writer.
2) John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
3) John 6:40 “For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
4) Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
V. The Promiser of Salvation
1. John 11:25-26 “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
2. Do you believe in the promise of Jesus in this passage?
3. Notice what he says in John 5:28-29 “Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.”
1) Herein is a great promise of Christ.
2) Do we believe this promise?
4. The resurrection of Christ assures us that this promise will occur. Acts 17:30, 31 “The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent: inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”
5. Hebrews 6:17-20 “Wherein God, being minded to show more abundantly unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath; that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us: which we have as an anchor of the soul, {a hope} both sure and stedfast and entering into that which is within the veil; whither as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
VI. The Overcomer
1. Jesus said to Lazarus, “Lazarus, come forth.” (John 11:43).
2. Through this statement, Lazarus overcame the bonds of death and was resurrected.
3. Jesus has overcome death itself never more to die. He is the firstfruits.
4. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 “But now hath Christ been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of them that are asleep. For since by man {came} death, by man {came} also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
5. We shall also overcome death nevermore to die if we believe in Him and are faithful to Him.
6. Read 1 Corinthians 15:50-57
7. Romans 6:8-11 “But if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him; knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him. For the death that he died, he died unto sin once: but the life that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Even so reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus.”
8. Finally, in this resurrection sermon outline…
VII. The Savior
1. Jesus provides for salvation through the resurrection.
2. Read Romans 6:1-11
3. Read Colossians 2:12 “having been buried with him in baptism, wherein ye were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
4. 1 Peter 3:21 “which also after a true likeness doth now save you, {even} baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;”
