INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Colossians 3:12-17

2. About the Text:

1) How often do you think about your clothing?

2) We put on Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:27), but what happens after that?

4) We must make an effort to have the attributes of Christ in our lives.

5) We must continue to put them on.

DISCUSSION: Putting on Christ means that we adopt His…

I.   Character – What About Christ Do We Put On? (12-15)

1. Tender Mercies – Empathy – The feeling you get when you feel bad for someone, pity.

2. Kindness – moral excellence, gentleness.

3. Humility – humbleness of mind, a self-reflective state of being that is open to change.

5. Longsuffering – patience over a long time, endures under passionate strain

6. Forbearance – puts up with things, endures, suffers, recognizes that people need to learn.

7. Forgiveness – to be gracious toward another, giving without expecting anything.

1) This is not the same word used in Acts 2:38, but the word for being gracious.

2) Sets aside complaints, faults, and blames for the benefit of another.

3) “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34).

8. Love

1) Agape – the highest form of love, seeking another’s good.

2) It is the perfect/complete bond, Greek word for ligament.

3) Love facilitates relationships.

4) If you find yourself not holding to your brothers or sisters in Christ, then you need more love.

5) “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (John 13:34).

9. Peace

1) This is an imperative command.

2) “O’ that the peace of God would rule in your heart…”

3) The Christian wants peace with everyone and is naturally at peace.

4) The word for “rule” is the Greek word for Umpire.

5) Peace is the judge/umpire of all the disputes that you would have in your life.

6) We are called in the one body, the church, to peace.

7) “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

II.  Words – How Do We Continue to Put On Christ? (16)

1. Notice the grammar.

1) The subject is “word.” This is Christ’s word.

2) The verb is “dwell.”

3) This is an imperative command, “O’ that the words of Christ would dwell….”

4) Several adverbials describe “how” the words of Christ dwell in us.

a. Richly – adverb

b. In all wisdom – adverbial prepositional phrase.

c. Teaching and Admonishing is a conjunction of two adverbial participles

a) With Psalms

b) With Hymns

c) With Spiritual Songs

d. Singing – another adverbial participle

a) With grace

b) In Your Hearts

c) To the Lord

2. We need the words of Christ to dwell in us to inform our lives.

1) Singing Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs is one way for the words of Christ to dwell in us.

2) We sing with grace/favor in our hearts to the Lord.

3) We have many songs and hymns that have lyrics from scripture.

3. We must have a daily dose of Christ’s word to maintain faithfulness.

1) “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11).

2) “These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

3) “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32).

III. Life – Why Do We Put On Christ? (17)

1. Whatever we do in word or in deed – this encompasses our whole life.

1) Christianity is not a hobby.

2) Christ is our life (Colossians 3:4).

3) “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30-31).

4) “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:24-25)

2. We must do all in the name of/by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

1) This is speaking of daily life, not just the work and worship of the church.

2) For the Christian, all daily conduct is informed by Christ.

3) “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct” (1 Peter 1:15).

4) “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom” (James 3:13).
