DISCUSSION: The Lord is our strength because . . .
I. He Hears (1-2)
1. We call on the LORD only (1a).
1) It is a personal call – David says “You.”
2) It is a confident call – the LORD is our Rock.
3) “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3).
4) “Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:22).
2. No others will listen (1b).
1) The LORD listens – “be not deaf/silent to me.”
2) If the LORD will not listen, it is equal to no one listening – go to the pit.
3) “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles” (Psalm 43:17).
3. To call on the LORD is to actively seek Him (2).
1) David uses his voice to pray.
2) David uses his hands to pray.
3) David uses his body to pray.
4. Know that the LORD hears gives me strength.
II. He Protects (3-5)
1. From the plots of the wicked (3) – “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me Says the LORD.” (Isaiah 54:17).
2. By doing justice to the wicked (4) –
1) “He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
2) “Who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek” (Romans 2:6-9).
3. By their neglect of righteousness (5) – “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life” (Galatians 6:7-8).
4. Knowing that the LORD Protects gives me strength.
III. He is Trustworthy (6-7)
1. He hears – “The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth” (Psalm 145:18).
2. He strengthens – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
3. He shields – “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word” (Psalm 119:114).
4. He helps – “For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13).
5. He gives joy – Philippians 4:4
6. He is worthy of praise – “I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:3).
7. Knowing that the LORD is trustworthy gives me strength.
IV. He Saves
1. His anointed –
1) “Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand” (Psalm 20:6).
2) “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me” (Isaiah 61:1).
2. His people – “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
3. By protecting their inheritance – “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:26-29).
4. By shepherding them –
1) “The Lord is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1).
2) “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” (John 10:11).
5. By supporting them forever – “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
6. Knowing that the LORD saves gives me strength.
CONCLUSION:
1. The LORD is our strength because,,,
1) He hears.
2) He protects.
3) He is trustworthy.
4) He saves.
