Prayer — One Of Our First Priorities
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles Tags: Bible Lessons on Prayer, Bible Lessons on PrioritiesWhen folks are facing trials and problems in life, they often turn to prayer only as a last resort. I recently read of a man who was fighting a valiant battle with cancer, but was gradually loosing the battle. Referring to his doctors, one of the man’s friends said, “Well, they’ve tried everything else, I guess it’s time to begin praying.”
In the above story, prayer was seen as a last-ditch effort to resolve the problem. Only after all other options were eliminated did the man’s friend decide it was time to pray. It was a desperate last resort — a “grasping at straws.”
Instead of prayer being a last resort, it should be one of the first things we do! The Lord answers prayer, and He wants us to come to Him continually with all of our needs (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The Bible tells us to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer …. let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
Brethren and friends, let’s never wait until prayer becomes a last resort — let’s make prayer one of our first priorities — the Lord did! (Luke 6:1-12 – note specifically vs.11-12). Also see 1 Thessalonians 5:17; cf. Ephesians 6:18; James 5:13; James 5:16-18.
