Will Being Morally Good Save Us?

A querist asks, “Will being morally good save us on judgment day?” The Scriptures tell us that we cannot be saved by our own merit, our own righteousness, or personal works (Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 3:5; Romans 10:3). To be in a saved state, we

“Fighting For The Truth”

The Gospel Advocate, dated 15 Feb. 1940, p. 148, stated the following regarding Brother F.B. Srygley: “No one has sacrificed more time from home and family for the cause of Christ than Brother  Srygley. No one has endured more hardships, suffered more bitter persecution, and been slandered more than was he. Those who read his […]

Are We Born With A Sin Nature?

According to some of our religious friends, the text in Ephesians 2:3 is supposed to teach that babies are born with a “sin nature” or a “sinful nature” and that they are under the wrath of God because of that nature. But isn’t it a monstrous and a blasphemous dogma to say that God is […]

“Don’t Get ‘Spiritual’”

A recent mail-out from a denominational source dealt with some kind of public protest where one felt “called by God” to carry a wooden cross through the city streets. When one criticized the move as being “show-offy” and with virtually no promise of accomplishing any good, the person said, “Now wait. Don’t go getting ‘spiritual’ […]

God In Psalm 23

The Lord is my Shepherd (That’s Relationship!) I shall not want (That’s Supply!) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures (That’s Rest!) He leadeth me beside the still waters (That’s Refreshment!) He restoreth my soul (That’s Healing!) He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness (That’s Guidance!) For His name’s sake (That’s Purpose!) […]

What Is The Value Of Jesus To Us?

Exodus 21 lists various penalties for different offenses. In Exodus 21:28-32, injuries that could be caused by an ox are discussed, along with the consequences of these injuries for the owner of the animal. In the event that an ox killed a man or woman, the ox was to be stoned and its flesh uneaten. […]

Who Are You?

On one occasion when Paul was preaching the gospel in the city of Ephesus, a certain group of vagabonds sought to emulate Paul by taking it upon themselves to cast out a demon. When these men sought to do such, the evil spirit turned on them and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; […]

Sermon on Staying Focused | Living The Focused Life

INTRODUCTION: Philippians 3:10-16

A. A hungry tiger started tracking the scent of a deer. As he followed the deer, he came across the scent of a rabbit. He turned aside and started after the rabbit. Then he was distracted by the scent of a mouse and started following that. He finally came to the hole into which the mouse had vanished. He ended the day hungrier than when he had started the day. This fable illustrates how many spend their lives distracted with this or that, and at the end of the day – they have accomplished little.

B. In Philippians 3:10-16 we find a focus for one’s life – a spiritual focus

1. Paul wrote Philippians 3:13b-14

2. Paul said “this one thing I do”

a. Not “a hundred things I start” or “a dozen things I attempt” – but “one thing I do”

Can I Sue for Defamation?

Is it ever appropriate for a Christian to bring a lawsuit against someone for defamation of character? While the Bible doesn’t comment specifically on the issue of bringing a lawsuit for defamation of character, it does have some other principles which I think will answer your question. First, the Bible teaches that Christians are NEVER […]

Peter Cursed – Was Peter Really Cursing And Swearing?

Peter cursed – Bible Lesson by Mike Riley on Peter’s cursing and swearing. Did he really curse in the same sense that people curse today? A querist asks, “In Mark 14:71, was Peter really cursing and swearing when he adamantly denied ever knowing Christ?” The text in Mark 14:71-NKJV reads: “But he began to curse […]

In Matthew 28:18-20, we read: “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19″Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20″teaching them to observe […]

Is the church of Christ the only ones going to be saved?

I have a very tough question. I have been a member of the Lord’s Church for a few years, and once people find out, the first question they ask is “Why does the church of Christ think they are the only ones going to heaven and not the denominational churches?” I think they ask this […]
