How Long Was Jesus In The Flesh?

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

A querist asks, “How long was Jesus in the flesh? In Luke 24:39, after the resurrection, we find that Jesus has flesh and bones. Is Jesus still in the flesh or was He transformed, as those who remain when Jesus comes, when He was taken up in a cloud to heaven?”

Luke 24:39 tells us that Jesus was indeed in the flesh for a period of forty days (Acts 1:3) in which period of time Christ was seen, touched and handled by various groups of people (1 Corinthians 15:5-7; 1 John 1:1-2).

According to the inspired penman, Paul, our fleshly mortal bodies cannot inherit the immortal kingdom or state (1 Corinthians 15:50), therefore, when Christ ascended back into heaven (Acts 1:9-11), His body was changed into an incorruptible body (1 Corinthians 15:53). At Christ’s return, our corruptible bodies will be changed into an incorruptible body like our Saviour’s body (1 Corinthians 15:51-53; Philippians 3:20-21; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:42-44; Colossians 3:4).
