Has Satan Ever Appeared as a Man?
Categories: Questions and Answers Tags: Has Satan Ever Appeared as a Man?Has Satan ever taken the form of a man to entice people to sin?
This question reminds me of an old country music song by Terri Gibbs titled “Somebody’s Knockin’.” The lyrics go, “Somebody’s knocking. Should I let him in? Lord, it’s the Devil. Would You look at him? I’ve heard about him, but I never dreamed he’d have blue eyes and blue jeans.” The song tells the truth that the Devil often uses other people to do his work of getting people to sin and turn away from God. Having that in mind, you could say that the answer to this question is “Yes,” in that sense, but I do not think that is what the questioner is asking.
So, sometimes in the Bible, God appears to man in what are called theophanies. These are instances where God takes the form of a man for one reason or another. You see this in Genesis 18 when He announced to Abraham that He was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. There is another in Joshua 5:13-15 when the Lord appears to Joshua as the Commander of the army of the Lord. So, there is no question that sometimes God took the form of a man, but what about Satan. Has he ever done this?
We know that Satan can take certain forms. The Bible tells us that he appeared as a serpent in Genesis 3 when he tempted Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In 2 Corinthians 11:14, Paul wrote, “For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” Paul was speaking about what Satan could do, not necessarily what he has actually done. So, I suppose if Satan could transform himself into an angel of light, he could certainly transform himself into the form of a man. The question, however, is, “Has he ever done it?”
The Bible talks about Satan and the devil. They are the same being. Revelation 12:9 identifies the great dragon as “the Devil and Satan who deceives the whole world.” His whole self-appointed task is to entice, deceive, and mislead people to commit sin. First Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Sometimes he does this through other people. Luke 22:3 says, “Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.” John 13:2 says, “And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him.” Judas never became Satan himself, but Satan used him. Satan also used Ananias and Saphira. Acts 5:3 says, “But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?’” These appear, however, to be actions through a human agent.
We know that Satan tempted Job and Jesus directly. In Job 2:7, we read, “So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.” Matthew 4:1-11 discusses how Satan tempted Jesus three times. The Bible does not say what form Satan took. Maybe he took the form of a man or maybe he took another form. We do not know. So, while it is certainly possible that Satan could take the form of a man to entice people to sin, the Bible never records that he has done that at least in those exact words. The only time where he may have is when Jesus was tempted directly by the devil, but the text does not explicitly say that Satan took the form of a man to do that.
