TITLE: GOVERNMENT

PROPOSITION: To set forth “government” in God’s design.

OBJECTIVE:That we have the proper attitude toward and proper behavior regarding “government.”

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Romans 13:1-7.

2. Regarding the text:

1) There are, as far as this earth is concerned, “higher powers.”

2) There are, in fact, three great organizations created by God:

a. The home;

b. Civil governments; and

c. The church.

3) The “higher powers” are ordained by God!

4) On the basis of this, God instructs Christians to be “in subjection” to these “higher powers.”

5) God has also given limits of human, civil governments by stating what they can do and wherein they can function.

3. Reference to Subject, Title, Proposition and Objective.

DISCUSSION: Regarding government, we see –

I.   THEIR ORDINATION.

1. Romans 13:1.

2. 1 Peter 2:13-17.

II.  THEIR FUNCTION.

2) Romans 13:3.

2. “Praise to them that do well.”

1) Peter 2:14; and

2) Romans 13:3-4.

3. Romans 13:4; the sword for national defense includes its being used to punish moral evil.

III. EVERY CHRISTIAN’S ATTITUDE AND ACTION.

1. Subjection:

1) Romans 13:1;

2) Romans 13:5;

3) 1 Peter 2:13.

2. Financial support:

1) Romans 13:6-7;

2) 1 Peter 2:17.

3. Respect; Romans 13:7.

4. Prayer: 1 Timothy 2:1-2.

5. To silence the ignorance of foolish men, 1 Peter 2:15-16.

CONCLUSION:

1. Regarding government, we have seen:

1) THEIR ORDINATION;

2) THEIR FUNCTION; and

3) EVERY CHRISTIAN’S ATTITUDE AND ACTION.

2. Because of Philippians 3:20, our heavenly citizenship, we must be the best possible citizens in the earthly country where we live.
