“God Is Not The God Of The Dead, But Of The Living”

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

A querist asks, “Could you explain Matthew 22:32 to me? Is it the case that the patriarchs are alive in Heaven, or do they wait judgment like we do?”

Matthew 22:32 – KJV states, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

Christ is explaining to the Sadducees (who did not believe in the resurrection – Matthew 22:23) that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are presently living. Note they are living in anticipation of that heavenly realm (see Hebrews 11:16 – KJV, and note the phrase, “But now” – present tense). Where are the patriarchs presently living (including all the faithful (Hebrews 11:13)? This biblical article, written by a faithful teacher of God’s Word, will give us the answer. For illustration purposes, a chart is included.
