Genesis 1:9-10
Categories: Bible Study LessonsMoses continues with his enumeration of the the basic features of the physical universe. He now ascribes to God’s creative power the dry land on which the Israelites were sitting at their first hearing of the book. While other religions ascribed the earth as a god in itself, Moses explained it to be a creation of the God who met them at Sinai (Exodus 20), and that God Himself had named it. The same was true with regard to the sea. They held a memory of the Red Sea in recent memory. They had seen it controlled by God’s prophet, by the power of God. They now know that the sea is a creation of God.
God has left and will leave no room for any local god of the hills or god of the sea or sky. Israel is going into a land infested by idolaters. If it is to survive it must understand the true source of all things and the one true God that created them. This is the foundation stone of the truth.
Just the same in our generation, idolatry is not dead. Worldwide idolatrous religions are flourishing, including the self-worship of humanism. It is extremely important for this generation to recognize that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is THE God who created heaven and earth and all that is in them.
