Categories: Sermon Outlines, Topical Sermon Outlines

SUBJECT: Attitude

TITLE: Enoch’s Exam

PROPOSITION: This lesson will cover the three tests of Enoch’s Exam: Action (Enoch walked with God), Association (Enoch walked with God), and Attitude (Enoch walked with God).

OBJECTIVES: Each listened should be able to explain what walking with God entails by defining the Christian walk, explaining their association with God and demonstrating their Christian character.

AIM: To impress upon the hearer what an opportunity and privilege it is to be able to walk with God.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Genesis 5:21-23

2. About the Text:

1) We know from Hebrews11:5 that Enoch had the kind of faith that pleased God.

2) We know from Jude 1:14 that Enoch was a prophet.

3) However, the striking phrase in the life of Enoch is found here in Genesis5:21-23–“Enoch walked with God.”

DISCUSSION: Enoch’s exam involves three tests. The test of . . .

I.   Action–In this test we have the question of . . .

1. Preparation–Are you prepared to walk with God?

1) Parental Preparation–“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs22:6)

2) Personal Preparation.

a. Count the cost–Luke 14:28ff

b. Make the effort–Ezra 7:10 “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.”

3) Providential Preparation–“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.” (Genesis50:20).

2. Practice–Will you walk with God?

1) James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

2) 1 Chronicles 28:20 “And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.”

3) Ezra 10:4 “. . . be of good courage, and do it.”

3. Perseverance–Will you continue to walk with God?

1) God has prepared good works that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

2) We are to walk worthily of the calling wherewith we were called. Ephesians 4:1

3) We are to walk as children of light. Ephesians5:8

4) We are to walk carefully, not as unwise, but as wise. Ephesians5:15

5) 1 Thessalonians 4:1 “Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.”

II.  Association–In this test we have the question of . . .

1. Presence–Are we with God?

1) Are we around God?

a. Do we attend the regularly scheduled services of the saints? Hebrews 10:25

b. Do we have a regular prayer life? 1 Thessalonians 5:17

c. Do we study God’s word regularly? Acts 17:11

2) Is God around us?

a. Do those we associate with know we are Christians? Acts 17:6 (turned world upside down.)

b. Do we exemplify Christ in our lives? 1 Corinthians 11:1 “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”

c. Do we help God, or do we hide Him?

2. Proximity–Where are we walking in relationship to God?

1) Are we walking behind God? (sin of ommission)–“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

2) Are we walking in front of God? (sin of commission)–“Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 9

3) Are we walking next to God? “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

3. Personality–Do we agree with God?

1) Amos 3:3 “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

2) God will not be around those who are not holy. “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16)

3) God will not be around those who are not righteous. “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” (Romans 6:13).

4) God will not be around those who are not pure. “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”

III. Attitude–In this test we have the question of . . .

1. Purpose–What guides our attitide?

1) Ecclesiastes 12:13

2) Colossians 3:17

2. Perspective–What focuses our attitude? Peter talks about these focal points in 2 Peter 1:5-11

3. Principle–What supports our attitude? God’s wisdom, or man’s wisdom? 1 Corinthians1:18-25

CONCLUSION:

1. Enoch walked with God.

2. Let us recognize the exam that Enoch sets before us

1) The test of action.

2) The test of association.

3) The test of attitude.

3. Invitation
