DISCUSSION: This song emphasizes Christ as King by discussing…
I. His Reign on the Throne
1. “Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon the throne; Hark, how the heavn’ly anthem drowns all music but its own! Awake my soul and sing of Him who died for thee, and hail Him as thy matchless King thru all eternity.”
2. Christ is King on the throne.
1) “Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.”
2) “But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom” (Hebrews 1:8).
3) “And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:17).
II. His Victory over Death
1. “Crown Him the Lord of life, Who triumphed o’er the grave, who rose victorioius in the strife for those He came to save! His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.”
2. Jesus triumphed over death.
1) “But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him’” (Mark 16:6).
2) “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:14-15).
3) “The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:56-57).
III. The Peace that Results from His Reign
1. “Crown Him the Lord of peace, Whose pow’r a scepter sways from pole to pole that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise; His reign shall know no end, and round His pierced feet fair flow’rs of Paradise extend, their fragrance ever sweet.”
2. Jesus’ reign results in peace.
1) “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
2) “’I create the fruit of the lips: ??Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,’” ??Says the LORD, ??‘And I will heal him.’” (Isaiah 57:19).
3) “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).
4) “For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace” (Ephesians 2:14-15).
IV. His Fellowship with Heaven
1. “Crown Him the Lord of heav’n, One with the Father known, and the blest Spirit thru Him giv’n from yonder glorious throne! All hail, Redeemer hail! For Thou hast died for me; Thy praise and glory shall not fail thru out eternity.”
2. Christ makes fellowship with heaven.
1) “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him” (John 1:18).
2) “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will[ believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:20).
3) “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:1-3).
