TITLE: “Christ Receiveth Sinful Men”
PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will discuss 1) Why, 2) How, and 3) To What End Jesus receives sinful men.
OBJECTIVES: Each should be able to explain why, how, and to what end Jesus receives sinful men.
AIM: To instill the knowledge of salvation and motivate each individual to be received of Jesus. To motivate the faithful to tell others why, how, and to what end Jesus receives sinful men.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Mark 2:15-17
2. About the Text:
1) Jesus had just called Matthew, a publican, to follow after him.
2) Matthew evidently had invited Jesus to have a meal in his house along with many of his friends and acquaintances.
3) As Matthew was a publican, he would likely have known other publicans.
4) The Pharisees considered publicans (tax-collectors) to be thieves because many of them collected taxes unjustly.
5) Matthew evidently had friends who were morally less than reputable as well.
6) It is clear from the context that Jesus was not merely engaging in debaucheries. He was teaching.
7) Moreover, the people were listening and they were following his teachings.
8) The Pharisees, however, were not interested in their repentance as much as they were interested in their social status. Hence their criticisms.
9) Jesus responds to them that he came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

DISCUSSION:
I. Why does Christ receive sinful men?
1. Because men need to be received.
1) This implies they are in a state of not being received.
2) Sin separates us from God – Isaiah 59:2
3) All have sinned – Romans 3:23
4) In regards to our relationship with God, we all need to be received by God.
2. Because without Jesus, men would be lost and without hope.
1) Ephesians 2:11, 12 “Wherefore remember, that once ye, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called Circumcision, in the flesh, made by hands; that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world”
2) Romans 6:23
3. Because Jesus is the only who may receive sinful men on behalf of God.
1) He chose to receive sinful men by taking their sins upon Him on the cross – 2 Cor. 5:21 “Him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; that we might become the righteousness of God in him.”
2) God approved him for receiving sinful men by God’s resurrecting Him from the dead. – Acts 17:31 “inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”
3) No other may receive sinners today on behalf of God – Acts 4:12 “And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.”
II. How does Christ receive sinful men?
1. By calling the sinner…
1) This call is made through the gospel – 2 Thess. 2:14 “he called you through our gospel”
2) But calling the sinner to do what?
3) To come to him – Matthew 11:28-30 “Come unto me….”
4) To hear His word – Mark 9:7 “Hear him.”
5) To obey that word – Hebrews 5:9 “author of salvation to all them that obey him.”
6) To believe – John 8:24 “Except you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins.”
7) To repent – Acts 3:19 “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.”
8) To confess – Matt. 10:32 “Whosoever confesses me before men….”
9) To be baptized – Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38
2. By cleansing the sinner…
1) Through the word – Ephesians 5:26 “by the washing of water with the word”
2) Through faith – Acts 15:9 “cleansing their hearts by faith”
3) Through His blood – Hebrews 9:13, 14 “For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling them that have been defiled, sanctify unto the cleanness of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish unto God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
III. What are the results of Christ receiving sinful men?
1. The sinner is forgiven of sins.
1) Remission of sins – Matthew 26:28, Acts 2:38
2) Forgiveness of trespasses – Col. 2:13, Eph. 1:7
3) God no longer remembers our sins against us – Hebrews 10:17
2. The sinner’s fellowship is restored to God.
1) He is redeemed from sin to serve God
a. Romans 6:17, 18 “But thanks be to God, that, whereas ye were servants of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching whereunto ye were delivered; and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness.”
b. Eph. 1:7 “in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.”
2) He is reconciled to God.
a. Rom. 5:10 “For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life”
b. 2 Cor. 5:18 “But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and gave unto us the ministry of reconciliation”
3) He has fellowship with God – 1 John 1:3 “that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you also, that ye also may have fellowship with us: yea, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ”
3. The sinner is made a saint.
1) 1 Cor. 1:2 “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, even them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, their Lord and ours:”
2) 1 Cor. 6:11 “And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.”
4. Continual cleansing — 1 John 1:7-9
CONCLUSION:
1. Christ Receiveth Sinful Men
1) Why?
a. Men need to be received.
b. Without Jesus they are lost.
c. Only through Jesus can they be received of God, the Father.
2) How?
a. By calling the sinner.
b. By cleansing the sinner.
3) To What End?
a. Forgiveness of sins.
b. Fellowship with God.
c. Sainthood
