OBJECTIVE: Each should understand that these fundamental truths make sense of the world.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Colossians 1:15-20

2. About the Text:

1) The book of Colossians is a contrast between Christ and the speculations of men.

2) Paul’s answer to all opposition to Christ is to tell them about Christ.

3) Understanding the identity of Christ is why Christianity makes sense.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: Christ is King because . . .

I.   He is the Creator (15-16).

1. Jesus is the Creator.

1) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1-2).

2) “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:1-2).

3) “For thus says the LORD, ??Who created the heavens, ??Who is God, ??Who formed the earth and made it, ??Who has established it, ??Who did not create it in vain, ??Who formed it to be inhabited: ‘?I am the LORD, and there is no other’” (Isaiah 45:18).

2. This means that Jesus is King.

II.  All Things are For Him (16).

1. God created all things for Jesus.

1) “For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.” (Heb.2:10).

2) “For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36).

3) “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Phil.2:13).

2. Jesus is King because everything was made “for Him.”

III. He Supports and Sustains (17).

1. Jesus upholds His creation.

1) “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Heb.1:3a).

2) “He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion” (Jeremiah 10:12).

2. Jesus sustains His creation.

1) “Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” (Acts 14:17).

2) “You established the earth, and it abides. They continue this day according to Your ordinances, For all are Your servants” (Psalm 119:90b-91).

3. Jesus is King because he supports and sustains all things.

IV.  He Unites Mankind in One Body, the Church (18).

1. Jesus died so that all humanity might be united in His body.

1) “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28).

2) “And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).

2. All are called to unity and equality in the body of Christ, the church.

1) Galatians 3:26-29

2) “And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all” (Eph.1:22-23).

V.   The Fullness of God Dwells in Him (19).

1. Jesus was a real person.

1) “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known” (John 1:18).

2) “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:4-5).

2. Jesus is God.

1) John 1:1-2

2) “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature” (Heb.1:3a).

VI.  He Reconciles All Things to Himself by His Sacrifice (20).

1. 2 Corinthians 5:18-21.

2. “After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Heb.1:3b).

CONCLUSION:

1. Christ is King because…

1) He is the Creator.

2) All Things are For Him.

3) He Supports and Sustains.

4) He Unites Mankind in One Body.

5) The Fullness of God Dwells in Him.
