Choose The Right

Categories: Sermon Outlines, Topical Sermon Outlines

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will study three choices that need to be made in our lives. We must: 1) choose the right way 2) choose the right attitudes 3) choose the right company.

OBJECTIVE: The hearer should be able to 1) list these three choices that need to be made in each of our lives 2) cite at least one appropriate scriptures for each choice that needs to be made and 3) discuss the significance of Deuteronomy 30:15-20

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Deuteronomy 30:19-20

2. About the Text:

1) For forty years the Israelites have been wandering in the wilderness.

2) For their disobedience, God decreed that every one above the age of twenty with the exception of Joshua and Caleb would die in the wilderness (Numbers 14:29-38).

3) Now, that generation had passed away. There was a new generation standing before Moses.

4) And his last act as their spiritual leader was to rehearse to them all the things of the law.

5) The book of Deuteronomy is the book in which Moses does this (Deuteronomy 5:1).

6) In chapter 30, Moses exhorts the Israelites to obey Jehovah.

7) He tells them that God’s commands are not hard to keep (Deuteronomy 30:11-14).

8) He then lays before them the decision (read Deuteronomy 30:15-20).

DISCUSSION: We must choose. . .

I.   The Right Way

1. The way of life/the narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14)

1) To love

a. Jesus said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37).

b. John wrote, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3).

2) To obey

a. Jeremiah 7:23 ” But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.”

b. 2 Corinthians 2:8-9 “Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.”

3) To cleave

a. Jeremiah 13:11 “For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.”

b. Acts 11:22-23 “Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.”

2. The way of death/the wide gate (Matthew 7:13-14)

1) The example of the Israelites

a. 1 Corinthians 10:5-12 “But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”

b. Hebrews 4:6-11 “Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”

2) The way of rebellion

a. 1 Samuel 15:22-23 “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”

b. Jeremiah 11:8 “Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do: but they did them not.”

3) Our end result if we do not obey–2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”

II.  The Right Attitudes (Attitude is the manner in which we approach/face/confront something)

1. The attitude of subjection/obedience–whatever God tells me I will obey.

1) This was the attitude of Jesus

a. Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

b. Hebrews 5:7-9 “Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.”

2) This should be our attitude as well

a. Peter writes, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps” (1 Peter 2:21).

b. 2 Corinthians 10:5-6 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”

2. The attitude of steadfastness/perseverance/patience–wherever God puts me I will remain faithful.

1) 1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

2) James 1:2-4 “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” (The meaning of patience–hupomeno)

3) Rev. 2:10 “…be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

3. The attitude of good stewardship–whatever God gives me I will use it for him.

1) The first principle of stewardship–We must give of ourselves “And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God” (2 Corinthians 8:5).

2) The second principle of stewardship–We must do the best with what we have–Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30).

3) The third principle of stewardship–We must be faithful with what we do. “Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:1-2).

III. The Right Company

1. With whom our company should not be.

1) The world–1 John 2:15 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

2) Evil companions–1 Corinthians 15:33 “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

3) False brethren–2 John 9-11 “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

2. With whom our company should be.

1) With the Father–1 John 1:3 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

2) With each other–1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

3) Psalm 133:1 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

CONCLUSION:

1. Read Deuteronomy 30:19-20

2. May we all choose

1) The right way, and be right with God

2) The right attitudes, and be right with ourselves

3) The right company, and be right with our friends.

3. Ezekiel says in 18:31-32 “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.”
