Another Shameful Anniversary Of Roe vs. Wade

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

This coming Saturday, January 22, 2011, marks the 38th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade that made abortion legal in this country (1973). Statistics indicate that there were over 1.6 million abortions performed in the United States in 1990. No other taking of human life comes anywhere close to that number. Some politicians’ conscience have either become so calloused on the issue, or so afraid of the feminist left, that they will not even curb partial-birth abortion.

Politically Correct Talk

Politically correct talk of “reproductive rights” and “pro-choice,” will not cover the blood from tiny veins. That blood is on the hands of men and women who choose abortion. That blood is on the hands of medical personnel who perform abortions. That blood is on the hands of politicians and judges who uphold abortion. And that blood is on the hands of ordinary citizens who ignore the issue of abortion when they go to the polls.

“Hear The Word Of The Lord”

“Hear the Word of the Lord ….” (Jeremiah 31:10). God, speaking to Jeremiah said, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you ….” (Jeremiah 1:5 ESV). Jeremiah fully understood that God recognized him as a human being while he was still in the womb.

Isaiah’s Recognition

Isaiah recognized that he was a person prior to his birth, when he records, “Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken ye peoples, from afar; Jehovah hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name …. and now, saith Jehovah that formed me from the womb to be his servant” (Isaiah 49:1 KJV; Isaiah 49:5 KJV).

David’s Recognition

David recognized that he was created by God as a human being from his mother’s womb, when he observed, “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I Praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:13-14 ESV).

Things The Lord Hates

The Proverb writer states that one of the things that the LORD hates are, “hands that shed innocent blood …..” (Proverbs 6:17 ESV). Are unborn babies innocent? You be the judge (Exodus 21:22-25; cf. Matthew 19:14).

Again, the Proverb writer recognized social responsibility for those who are oppressed in (Proverbs 24:11-12 NASB), “Deliver those who are being taken away to death, and those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back. If you say, “See, we did not know this,” Does He not consider it who weighs the hearts? And does He not know it who keeps your soul? And will He not render to man according to his work?”

A Picture Of The Downtrodden

The picture illustrated in the above passage, is that of the downtrodden who have no one to defend them and are defenseless in their own power (i.e., babies in the womb). We see them “staggering” like poor beasts being driven to slaughter.

One might ask, “Is there no one to rescue them?” “Oh,” says the self-declared innocent bystander, “I did not know this was happening” (Proverbs 24:12a). The teacher replies, “Not good enough – for God tests our hearts. He knows whether you knew, and He will requite you according to the way you responded to what you knew” (Proverbs 24:12b; cf. Matthew 25:31-46).

Conclusion:

Dear reader, after reading the above passages of Scripture from God’s inspired Word, can we not see how God recognized inspired men as “persons” while they were in their mother’s womb, and God’s attitude toward abortion?
