Addiction and the Christian – Part 3
Categories: Bulletin Articles Tags: Addiction and the ChristianTobacco, alcohol, and drug addictions need serious attention. These addictions can create tremendous problems in the family such as crushing debt, poverty, loss of work, and even death. These are dangerous addictive substances that need to be eliminated from use altogether because of the great risk associated with them. When one is addicted to such things, professional counseling is needed. Get the help that is necessary to stop using the substance and resolve to never go back to it again. Returning to addictive substances only prolongs one’s problems.
Regardless the addiction, the most important thing is to get to the root of the problem as to why one has become addicted. Addiction is usually the result of unresolved and painful emotional issues that are buried in one’s subconscious. Exploring these issues can take a lot of time and effort but will be worth it when the root of the problem is identified and definitive steps toward confronting the issues may be taken. When one knows the reason behind the behavior, that reason may be disabused. Most bad behavior is cognitive in origin. This means that one may resolve the bad behavior through cognitive methods.
In 1 Corinthians 6:12, Paul wrote, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” To not be brought under the power of anything means that we must abstain from many things! Let’s resolve not to be involved in addictive sins and help our spouses overcome such things if they are involved in them.
God bless you and I love you.
