A Bold Challenge
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles Tags: Bible Lessons on EvangelismIn 1983, Steve Jobs issued this bold challenge to John Sculley, then president of Pepsi-Cola bottling company: “John, do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want to have a chance to change the world?” (source)
Mr. Sculley accepted the challenge.
Similarly, Jesus issued a bold challenge to three fishermen as they tended their nets. He commanded them to, “Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. They immediately left their nets and followed Him.“ (Mark 1:17-18).
With a handful of other ordinary men and the Lord’s leadership, they changed the first century world. On the day of Pentecost, the promised Holy Spirit began a new work through them, and 3,000 souls were saved (Acts 2:41). Eventually their critics would charge that they had turned the world “upside down” (Acts 17:6).
Brethren and friends, our world is immorally up and morally down, living by principles opposed to our Lord’s teachings. We can either follow the world’s dead-end philosophies, or we can accept Jesus’ challenge to bring spiritual change to our world.
As John Sculley accepted the bold challenge issued by Steve Jobs, let us willingly accept the bold challenge issued by our Lord:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20).
