Where does the Soul and Spirit Go after Death?

Categories: Bible Questions and Answers

Where did Jesus’ soul go while he was in the tomb? Where does the soul and spirit go after death?

According to Jesus words to the thief on the cross, Jesus said that he would be with Him in “paradise” (Luke 23:43). So this is where Jesus’ soul went after His death. Jesus described this place to his disciples in telling the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. In this story we get a picture of two dwelling places for man prior to the day of judgment. The first is a place where the soul of man can rest and be comforted in the bosom of Abraham. The second is a place that is described as torments. In this story, Abraham says that there is a great chasm separating these two places which cannot be crossed effectively blocking souls from the one realm to enter into the other realm and vice versa. Using the words that Jesus used to describe this place, we can say that the place of comforts is known as paradise.

Paul said that he once “caught up into Paradise” as well (2 Corinthians 12:4). This also supports the concept that there is a place where our souls will dwell before the Day of Judgment.

Jesus soul was in Paradise. This is where the souls of all faithful children of God will be after death. The place of torments is where those who die in sin will be until the Day of Judgment. We read about this place in 2 Peter 2:4-9 and Jude 6 as the place that wicked angels are kept until the Day of Judgment as well.
