1 Timothy Chapter One

1. The epistle is from Paul, the apostle, v. 1.
1) Apostle by the command of God, our Savior.
2) Apostle by the command of Christ, our hope.
2. The epistle is to Timothy, Paul's true child in the faith, v. 2.
3. The Greeting.
1) Grace, mercy and peace,
2) From God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
II. A Problem with False Teachers, vv. 3-11.
1. Timothy is to remain in Ephesus to deal with false teachers, vv. 3-7.
1) To charge them not to teach:
a. Different doctrines
b. Myths
c. Endless genealogies
2. Paul points out where things have gone wrong, v. 5.
1) In the area of love from a pure heart,
2) A good conscience,
3) A sincere faith.
3. He gives examples, vv. 6-7
1) Wandering into vain discussion,
2) Teaching without understanding what they are teaching.
4. The proper use of God’s law, vv. 8-10.
1) Must be used lawfully or legitimately.
a. Not for the just.
b. For the lawless, disobedient, ungodly and sinners.
c. For the unholy and profane.
III. Saving Sinners, the First Priority, vv. 12-20.
1. Christ came into the world to save sinners, vv. 12-15.
1) Paul's condition before salvation, vv. 12-13.
2) The grace of Christ and Paul’s salvation, vv. 14-15.
2. Paul's purpose is to save sinners, vv. 16-17.
1) Mercy was shown to Paul to highlight Christ’s plan for the salvation of man.
2) Paul is an example of sinful man being saved.
3. Timothy's purpose is to save sinners, vv. 18-20.
1) Paul calls it “wag(ing) the good warfare.”
2) Also “holding faith and a good conscience.”
3) Timothy is contrasted with those who have “made shipwreck of their faith.”
