Introduction:
1. From before the creation God designed a position for the populating of the planet and for the care of youth.
2. He entrusted this pivotal position to woman, to mothers.
3. Because of the obvious importance of the position we direct our attention to it.
1) It is a position exalted yet lowly.
2) It has the loftiest of goals (the rearing of a man or woman of God) yet its tasks are often menial.
3) A position heroic in the eyes of a child yet thought of as an unworthy pursuit by sinful elements of society.
4) A position of authority. Long before a little one knows of the authority of a police officer or a judge, mama is the law. Prov. 1:8; Prov. 6:20-21; Prov. 29:15
4. This hour the God-designed and created position of MOTHER comes before our attention. We will notice 1) Mother’s work, 2) Mother’s value, 3) Mother’s reward.
DISCUSSION:
I. MOTHER’S WORK LUKE 2:52 (God entrusted His Son to a mother.)
1. Impart wisdom – vocabulary, basic math skills, operation of household items. Child learns from mother how the world works.
2. Stature – See to care and feeding. 1 Sam. 2:19
3. Favor with God – See to spiritual needs. Knowledge of God and His law.
4. Favor with Man – Kindness, gentleness, truthfulness, courage, laws of men, customs, etiquette.
5. So lasting are the earliest lessons that when we think of the paths our lives have taken we cannot ignore these early lessons received from mother.
II. MOTHER’S VALUE
1. A God-designed and created position. Named by Adam, Gen. 3:20 (without mothers our race dies).
2. Among our greatest examples of devotion and sacrifice. John 19:25
3. I have heard the cry of the toddler when mama can’t be found. I have heard the cry of the aged when mother is, at last, gone. Much like the cry of the widows for Dorcas – Acts 9:39.
4. She is example, friend and guide. Her great value is seen in how much she is missed when she is gone.
5. Her persistence
From the observations of Washington Irving:
A father may turn his back on his child; brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies; husbands may desert their wives and wives their husbands. But a mother’s love endures through all; in good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world’s condemnation, a mother still loves on, and still hopes that her child may turn from his evil ways and repent; still remembers the infant smiles that once filled her bosom with rapture, the merry laugh, the joyful shout of his childhood, the open promise of his youth; and she can never be brought to think him all unworthy.
III. MOTHER’S REWARD
1. Few have enough money to pay mother for her time and attention. We often hear it said “You couldn’t pay me to do that.” Mother does it without pay. Who can pay for nights without sleep, moments of terror and the drudgery of one more load of diapers. Luke 2:41-51
2. Her reward comes in seeing her sons and daughters become men and women of God. Useful, kind, decent. Prov. 19:26; Prov. 23:22-25
3. Her reward comes in moments of appreciation from her children and the recognition of her husband. Prov. 15:20; Prov. 31:28
4. Her reward comes from her God when she hears, “Well done.” Prov. 20:20
CONCLUSION: As Christians we are to be thankful.
1. To God for providing for us.
2. To Christ for dying for us.
3. To mother for living for us.
4. Let God hear your prayers of thankfulness and mother your tender praises.
