A Synopsis Of The Bible

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The following is a synopsis of the Bible found in New Testaments that are left in motels and hotels by The Gideon organization. I have added appropriate Scriptures and article links:

“The Bible contains the mind of God (1 Corinthians 2:16; cf. John 15:15; 1 Peter 4:1), the state of man (Romans 3:9,23), the way of salvation (John 14:6; cf. Acts 4:10-12), the doom of sinners (Romans 2:8-9; Romans 6:23; 2 Thessalonians 1:3-9), and the happiness of believers (Philippians 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16).

Its doctrines are holy (Romans 8:12), its precepts binding (Matthew 16:19), its histories are true (Luke 4:16-21 [see Isaiah 61:1-2]; Luke 16:27-31; Luke 24:44-48; John 5:43-47), and its decisions are immutable (Hebrews 6:10-20; cf. Numbers 23:19; Romans 11:28-29).

Read it and be wise (Proverbs 2:1-9), believe it to be safe (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Romans 10:9; 1 Peter 3:21), and practice it to be holy (1 Peter 1:13-16; cf. Romans 12:1-2). It contains light to direct you (Psalm 119:105; cf. Proverbs 6:23), food to support you (Matthew 4:4; John 6:35,48,58), and comfort to cheer you (2 Corinthians 1:3-7; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

It is the traveler’s map (Proverbs 3:5-6), the pilgrim’s staff (Psalm 23:4; Isaiah 43:1-2), the pilot’s compass (Mark 4:35-41), the soldier’s sword (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12), and the Christian’s charter (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:18). Here Paradise is restored (Revelation 22:1-2; cf. Genesis 3:22-24), Heaven opened (Revelation 21:1-3), and the gates of hell disclosed (Matthew 16:18).

Christ is its grand subject (1 Corinthians 2:1-2; cf. Gal. 2:20), our good the design (Deuteronomy 6:24-25; cf. Jeremiah 32:36-42), and the glory of God its end (Revelation 21:22-23).

It should fill the memory (Psalm 119:11; cf. Psalm 37:31; Deuteronomy 6:4-9), rule the heart (Colossians 3:15; cf. Philippians 4:6-7), and guide the feet (Psalm 119:105). Read it slowly (Ephesians 3:1-4), frequently (Psalm 1:1-2; Acts 17:11), and prayerfully (Ephesians 6:17-18).

It is a mine of wealth (Proverbs 2:1-4; cf. Matthew 13:44), a paradise of glory (Revelation 2:7; Revelation 22:2,14), and a river of pleasure (Revelation 2:1; cf. Psalm 46:4-5).

It is given you in life (John 12:44-50), will be opened at the judgment (Revelation 20:12; cf. 2 Corinthians 5:10), and be remembered forever (1 Peter 1:25; cf. Isaiah 40:8).

It involves the highest responsibility (Luke 12:48; cf. 1 Corinthians 9:16-23; 1 Thessalonians 2:1-4; 1 Timothy 6:20; 2 Timothy 1:13-14), will reward the greatest labor (Matthew 25:20-23,31-35), and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents (Deuteronomy 4:2; Deuteronomy 12:32; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19).”
