Thy Word Have I Hid In Mine Heart…

Introduction: Psalm 119:11

1. For 176 vss. the psalmist writes powerfully regarding the word of God.

2. He begins with a blessing to all who walk in the Law, v. 1.

3. He ends with expressions of longing for salvation according to the law, the commandments.

4. The word of God is lifted high in prestige and importance for the child of God.

5. Our text highlights the importance of the word applied to the heart.

6. In this sermon I propose that God’s message to us is:

1) God’s word is to be hid in the heart.

2) God’s word hid guards against sin.

3) The heart with the word hid causes no offense.

7. I believe we can all see the essentiality of these matters and pay our closest attention.

DISCUSSION:

I.   God’s Word Is To Be Hid In The Heart

1. Why God’s Word?

1) He cannot lie, Tit. 1:2.

2) His word is truth, John 17:17.

3) His word is effective, Heb. 4:12; Jer. 23:29.

4) Because it saves, Rom. 1:16; James 1:21.

5) Because it equips, 2 Tim. 3:16-17.

2. What does “hid in mine heart” mean?

1) Hebrew scholars and more modern translation tell us that “hid” means “treasured.” This involves value, intent, stedfastness.

2) Valued, Psa. 19:7-10.

3) Intent, Ezra 7:10. Intent to learn and obey, Isa. 2:2-3.

4) Stedfastness, Acts 2:42.

3. What is the heart?

1) That which has thoughts, Gen. 6:5; Luke 2:19.

2) So, to hide something in the heart is to value, learn and obey.

3) King to write out a copy of they law, Deut. 17:14-20.

II.  God’s Word Hid Guards Against Sin

1. Uzzah’s death caused by ignorance, 2 Sam. 6:1-7; 1 Chr. 15:13-15.

2. God’s words to be in their hearts, Deut. 6:4-6.

3. Psa. 37:31, “The law of his God is in his heart: none of his steps shall slide.”

III. The Heart With The Word Hid (Treasured) Causes No Offense

1. God turns from us when we are in sin, Isa. 59:1-2.

2. The sin problem is universal, Rom. 3:23.

3. And fatal, Rom. 6:23.

4. The heart with the word treasured will obey the Gospel, Rom. 6:17.

5. Walks in the light, 1 John 1:7-9.

6. Seeks forgiveness, Acts 8:22.

7. Even in a wilderness, Acts 8:36.

CONCLUSION: Thy Word have I hid in mine heart…
