Why I Believe God Exists.

Categories: Sermon Outlines, Topical Sermon Outlines Tags:

PROPOSITION: To set forth four sound reasons for the belief in a supreme being.

OBJECTIVE: That the hearers might be strengthened in their faith and in their ability to defend the truth.

INTRODUCTION: Concerning the text…

1. Read Hebrews 3:1-5.

2. Concerning the text…

1) The writer of Hebrews addresses himself to Christians “holy brethren”.

2) He exhorts the brethren to “consider the Apostles and High Priest of our confession, even Jesus;”

3) While making his argument he makes a statement that constitutes a truth in itself.

4) For every house is builded by some one; but he that built all things is God.

5) The writer has presented a fundamental argument for the existence of God. EVERY EFFECT HAS AN ADEQUATE CAUSE.

3. STPO

1) This hour’s study is on the subject of Christian evidences.

2) Specifically we are studying “Why I Believe that God Exists.”

3) Four points will be set forth to prove the existence of God.

4) We all need to be reminded that there are sound reasons for believing in God, that it is not a “leap of faith” especially those of us who are in public schools or have children or grandchildren in school. You can believe that their faith will be tested. We need to be able to defend the truth.

5) 2 Choices: Either theism or atheism, God or no God. Law of excluded middle.

DISCUSSION: I believe in God because…

I.   ATHEISM CANNOT EXPLAIN MORALITY.

1. One of the biggest problems with atheism is the ultimate conclusion one must make with regard to morality.

1) If there is no God, there is no moral giver. No moral-giver, No morals.

2) This makes law the assertion of the strongest. Might makes right.

3) No morality, nothing wrong with killing.

a. Jeffrey Dahmer had drawn this conclusion.

b. Tom Warren and atheist (going to speak at anti-abortion rally) on plane. Stepping on roach, killing baby, same.

2. Very few atheists willing to acknowledge this conclusion.

1) All of us have a sense of oughtness about us. No matter how criminal one becomes there are still things that OUGHT NOT BE DONE.

2) We see film of the Murrah building in OKC. SOME THINGS OUGHT NOT BE DONE.

3) A woman is convicted of drowning her own children. SOME THINGS OUGHT NOT BE DONE.

4) A president holds up traffic at a busy airport for a $200 haircut. SOME THINGS OUGHT NOT BE DONE.

5) The world watched in horror as the Allies revealed what the Nazis had committed in the camps. The world decided SOME THINGS OUGHT NOT BE DONE. Under what law could the Nazis be tried?

a. They were obeying German law.

b. They were not under the law of any allied power.

c. At the Nuremberg trials, the prosecutor, Robert Jackson, set forth the argument by which the Nazis were convicted and hanged.

d. “There is a higher law which transcends the provincial and the transient.”

e. That is, there is a law higher than man which does not depend on the country you live in or the period of time in which you live.

f. This higher law can only be the law of God.

g. Shall we reverse our course because the professor says so? If we do we should apologize to the world for hanging the Nazis.

3. Every effect has its cause. If morality — then God.

II.  ATHEISM CANNOT EXPLAIN LIFE.

1. There are only two choices

1) Life came from God.

2) Life did not come from God.

2. If life did not come from God then only matter is left.

3. Two problems.

1) Science has yet to record an instance where life of any kind came from inanimate matter. (Dead rocks and dirt.)

2) If matter is creator, then matter is eternal.

a. If something exists now then something must have always existed.

b. However, this flies in the face of the scientists own observations, i.e., the second law of thermodynamics.

c. This law says that energy is becoming more and more unusable. The universe is winding down and will come to an end. This implies a beginning. Therefore matter is not eternal, it is an effect that must have a cause.

d. Hebrews 1:10-12. The Bible stated long ago this law that we have only recently “discovered.”

4. Cause and effect is a reality true science recognizes.

1) “every effect has an adequate cause.”

a. The fly didn’t knock the building down.

b. A nuclear explosion wasn’t caused by a fire cracker.

c. The Gettysburg address wasn’t written by an ape.

d. The incredible intricacies of life weren’t caused by the chemical reactions of inanimate rocks, dirt, and slime. What a fairy tale! What leap of faith!

III. ATHEISM CANNOT EXPLAIN THE UNIVERSE.

1. Some scientists assert that it all started with the “Big Bang.”

1) They never explain who or what provided the energy for the Bang.

2) They never explain how the physical realm came into being.

3) The empty vacuum of space itself must have an explanation.

2. Every effect must have an adequate cause.

1) toy — toy maker

2) shoe — shoemaker

3) watch — watchmaker

4) house — house maker

5) universe — universe maker

6) man — man maker

3. Of all the forces that could have made man in the God of the Bible is the only one where you can find adequate cause.

1) Only an omnipotent God could have made the universe.

2) Read Genesis 1:1; Exodus 20:11

IV.  THE ASSERTIONS OF THE AGNOSTIC ARE INSUFFICIENT.

1. The agnostic is one who say “can’t know.”

2. If he asserts “can’t know” a claim of knowledge is made.

3. Does he know that?

4. Will he say yes and flat contradict his position?

5. Will he say no? If he does for all he knows you CAN “know” that God exists.

CONCLUSION:

1. Hebrews 3:4. For every house is builded by some one but he that built all things is God.

2. Atheism cannot explain morality.

3. Atheism cannot explain life.

4. Atheism cannot explain the universe.

5. The assertions of the agnostic are insufficient.
