The Miracles Of Jesus

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Did Jesus really walk on water or simply use some nearby sandbars? Did He actually multiply bread and fish to feed 5,000 people, or did He just hypnotize the crowd into thinking He did? Were those miracles or merely clever deceptions?

Many folks who actually saw Jesus’ miracles refused to believe that He was the Messiah (John 7:1-5; John 12:37; cf. Matthew 13:58; Mark 6:3-6). In fact, some were ready to execute Him for claiming to be God (John 10:30-31). Jesus told them:

If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works [miracles], that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him” (John 10:37-38).

The miracles of Jesus identified Him as the Son of God, the Savior who had come to give His life for the sins of the world (John 3:16). His miraculous works and resurrection were not clever deceptions, but miracles demonstrating God’s power, love, and grace for mankind (John 20:30-31; 1 Peter 1:8-9; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Hebrews 2:1-4).
