“Supersize Our Understanding, Lord”

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

When we place our food order at a fast food restaurant, the cashier will sometimes ask us: “Would you like to supersize that?” In essence, they are asking us if we want more of what we are already getting.

Similarly, when we come into God’s presence, we need to ask:

Lord, please supersize [expand] my understanding of You and my spiritual condition through Your Word, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Isaiah had one such experience with God. Through a painful event in his life, Isaiah saw the Lord “high and lifted up” (Isaiah 6:1). Through this revelation, God supersized Isaiah’s understanding of His holiness. He saw God’s complete moral excellence that unifies His attributes (Isaiah 6:1-4).

God also enlarged Isaiah’s realization of his own sin (Isaiah 6:5 – NKJV). This led to an expansion or the “supersizing” of his understanding of God’s complete forgiveness and cleansing (Isaiah 6:6-7).

Only when Isaiah understood the depth of his sin, could he truly appreciate God’s forgiveness and cleansing (cf. Psalm 51:1-15). Additionally, the vision he saw of the holiness and majesty of God, led to his commitment to reach out to others and to help them increase their understanding of God (Isaiah 6:8-9).

Brethren, let’s ask God to supersize our understanding of His greatness and offer of salvation today, and then share that understanding with others (Colossians 1:3-10; 1 Thessalonians 1:1-9; cf. Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Acts 8:26-35; Acts 18:24-28).
