Sometimes It Takes A Brick To Get Our Attention!

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The story is told of a young and very successful executive who one day was speeding down a Chicago street in his new sleek 12-cylinder black XKE Jaguar. As he came upon some parked cars, he slowed down just in case a kid happened to dart out from between them. All of a sudden, a brick sailed out and smashed into the Jag’s shiny door.

Immediately, the executive slammed on his brakes, gears ground in reverse, and tires madly spun the Jaguar back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The executive jumped out of his new car, grabbed the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What was that all about? What in the world are you doing?” Building up a head of steam, he went on, “That’s my new Jag! That brick you threw is going to cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it?”

The young boy pleaded, “Please, mister, please, I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do — I threw the brick because no one else would stop!”

Tears began streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around a parked car — “It’s my brother, mister — he rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair. He’s hurt and I can’t lift him up. Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair?”

Moved beyond words, the young executive tried desperately to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Straining, he lifted the boy’s brother back in his wheelchair and took out his handkerchief to wipe the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be ok. He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long walk back to the young executive’s sleek, shining, 12-cylinder XKE Jaguar — a long, slow walk. He never fixed the side door of his Jaguar. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone had to throw a brick at him to get his attention.

Brethren and friends, when life’s bricks are being thrown at us, let’s slow down and pay attention to whoever is throwing the bricks — they might need our help and encouragement to “keep on keeping on” the often uneven road of life!
