Some Thoughts For The Upcoming New Year

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

A man fidgets and paces the floor. He spends sleepless nights wondering and worrying about the future. He fumes, “If only I knew what the future holds, I could make the right decision.”

Any kind of risk scares most of us. We want a sure thing. What does the future hold, we ask? Unfortunately, there are no flawless barometers of future happiness.

However, not knowing what the future holds, is to our advantage. Too much foresight can be detrimental.

An experienced cyclist once made this observation:

It is easier to ride a bicycle uphill at night than during the daylight. After dark, the cyclist can only see a few feet in front of him — his headlight giving him the illusion that the road is almost level. In this way, he feels he can go on a few more feet — and soon, he is up and over the crest. In daylight, the entire hill is revealed and seems so steep that his courage fails.

If we visualize any great task as a whole, it appears beyond our accomplishment. But when it is broken down into small segments, it can be accomplished. Any ultimate goal is thus accomplished by conquering a series of smaller goals.

By living one day at a time, we avoid discouragement, experience steady progress, and will ultimately achieve our ambitions (Matthew 6:34 NIV; 1 Corinthians 15:56-58; 2 Timothy 4:6-8).

God has allowed each one of us 365 days in the upcoming New Year to accomplish great things. That in itself is overwhelming if we try to swallow the whole lump. But by facing those days one day at a time, and with the Lord’s help, we can be wonderfully victorious (Matthew 6:34 NIV; Philippians 4:13).
