Introduction: Rom. 6:16-18
1. The matter of obedience is devalued in today’s religion.
2. Some call it legalism if we emphasize obedience.
3. By Paul’s words we can hardly see where to stop emphasizing obedience.
Discussion: Two choices presented.
I. Obey sin and die or obedience unto righteousness, v. 16
1. We are a servant of one or the other.
2. The importance lies in the destination.
1) Death – Rom. 6:21; Rev. 21:8
2) Righteousness – 2 Tim. 4:8; Rev. 19:8; 1 John 3:7.
II. A choice can be made and the state changed, v. 17
1. Change from servant of sin to servant of obedience, 1 Cor. 6:9-11; Col. 1:13; Acts 26:16-18.
2. They obeyed from the heart.
1) No hypocrisy.
2) No reservations (not holding anything back). No man can serve two masters, Matt. 6:24.
3) No turning back, Luke 9:62.
III. State being changed. Free from sin, v. 18
1. Matt. 26:28, by the blood of Christ.
2. Acts 2:38, by repentance and baptism.
