SUBJECT: Salvation

TITLE: THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

PROPOSITION: To set forth a study of 2 Corinthians 5:21, the righteousness of God and “in him,” as it relates to us.

OBJECTIVE:That we be located in Christ and be righteous.

INTRODUCTION: [beginning of this sermon on righteousness of God

1. Read: 2 Corinthians 5:21.

2. Regarding the text:

1) Define:

a. Sin – ;

b. Him – ; and

c. Righteousness – God’s plan to make man righteous before Him;

a) Matthew 6:33;

b) Romans 1:16-17; and

c) Romans 3:26.

2) Consider the apostles were the only ambassadors of Christ.

3) Thus, Paul as apostolic ambassador was beseeching the Corinthian Christians to be reconciled to God.

4) This shows and clearly demonstrates our constant need to re-evaluate, update and improve our relationship with the Lord.

5) The re-evaluation must be done objectively.

3. Reference to Subject, Title, Proposition and Objective.

DISCUSSION: In this verse we see –

I.   PROPITIATION.

1. Romans 3:23.

2. Matthew 27:46 Jesus took the sins of the world:

1) Isaiah 53:5-6;

2) Isaiah 59:1-2;

3) Separated from God.

3. Jesus knew no sin.

1) Jesus knew what sin was, but did not experience it: Genesis 4:1; Matthew 1:25.

2) Philippians 2:5-8.

3) Not an angel sent.

4) Hebrews 2:17-18.

5) In this humanity Jesus faced temptation and the cross: Hebrews 4:15.

II.  POSSIBILITY.

1. “Might.” The Lord has made righteousness a possibility but only we can make it a reality.

2. Subjunctive mood.

1) Philippians 2:9-11.

2) John 3:16.

a. No one should perish

b. but most will: Matthew 7:13-14; 7:21-23; 22:14.

3. Titus 1:2.

4. Hebrews 6:17-19.

III. POSITION.

1. The location, “in Him.”

2. The location of spiritual blessings:

1) Ephesians 1:3;

2) Ephesians 1:7;

3) 2 Timothy 2:10.

3. What does “in Christ” mean?

1) Ephesians 1:22-23;

2) Colossians 1:18;

3) Romans 12:4-5.

4. How many bodies does Jesus have and save?

1) Ephesians 4:4-6; and

2) Ephesians 5:23.

5. How does one enter into Christ?

6. How does one stay in Christ?
