Sermon on Mother’s Love

Date written: May 9th, 2003

Scripture ref: 1 Samuel 2:19

SUBJECT: Family

TITLE: I Know My Mother Loved Me

PROPOSITION: I know my mother loved me because 1) She disciplined me when I did wrong, 2) She cared for me when I was sick, 3) She fed and clothed me even when I was rebellious. 4) She taught me about God’s word.

OBJECTIVES: Each should be able to recall their mother’s love for them and God’s love for us.

AIM: To honor God’s creation of mothers.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 1 Samuel 2:19

2. About the Text:

1) Hannah is such a great example of a good mother in the scriptures.

2) This particular verse shows how much she cared for her son Samuel.

3) Samuel was so very small when he started his service to God that a ephod/vest covered him entirely.

4) Every year, Hannah would make “a little robe” for him to wear.

5) Hannah loved Samuel.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: I know my mother loved me because…

I.   SHE DISCIPLINED ME WHEN I DID WRONG.

1. Proverbs 13:24 “He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”

2. Proverbs 29:15 “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”

II.  SHE CARED FOR ME WHEN I WAS SICK.

1. David cared for the sick. Psalm35:13, 14 “But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart. I paced about as though he were my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.”

2. Jesus cared for the sick. Matthew 4:24 “Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.”

III. SHE FED AND CLOTHED ME EVEN WHEN I WAS REBELLIOUS.

1. This is the love of God. Matthew 5:44-48 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

2. This is the love of Christ. Romans 5:7, 8 “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

IV.  SHE TAUGHT ME ABOUT GOD’S WORD.

1. 2 Timothy 1:3-5 “I thank God … when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.”

2. Psalm 22:10 “I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God.”

CONCLUSION:

1. I know my mother loved me because…

1) She disciplined me when I did wrong.

2) She cared for me when I was sick.

3) She fed me and clothed me even when I rebelled against her.

4) She taught me about God’s word.

2. In short, I know my mother loved me because the Bible said she did the things that showed her love for me.

3. Invitation

1) If you are a Christian but have not been living right, you know God’s word, change today.

2) If you are not a Christian this morning…

a. God loves you this very hour.

b. Jesus’ sacrifice stands ready for you to accept.

a) Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing…”

b) Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible… .”

c) Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30).

d) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matthew 16:16).

e) Be Baptized for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:15,16).
