Sermon on Jesus’ Baptism

INTRODUCTION: Read Matt. 3:13-17, The Baptism of Jesus

1. The arrival of Jesus had been heralded by angels, an astronomical phenomenon, visiting dignitaries and a prophet of God.

2. Now it is time for God to make the announcement.

1) God had spoken audibly before, Exo. 20.

2) The announcement occurs at the moment of Jesus’ obedience.

3) It approves the baptism of John.

4) THE MESSIAH IS NOW HERE!

DISCUSSION:

I.   GOD’S VOICE APPROVED JOHN’S BAPTISM

1. John was a prophet but did no miracle, John 10:41

2. God’s voice showed that John’s preaching gave the way to righteousness. 3:11, 15

II.  GOD’S VOICE HERALDED THE COMING OF MESSIAH

1. Out in the wilderness with the people surrounding. 3:1, 5; Exo. 19:17.

2. The prophet like Moses has arrived, Deut. 18:15-19

3. The Lord’s chosen servant. Isa. 42:1; 42:21

4. The Lord’s annointed. Psa. 2.
