Christian Manhood – Sermon outline by Kevin Cauley on the Christian man as a faithful member of the church and of his qualities as a husband and father. From 1 Corinthians 11:2-9.

PROPOSITION: To study the qualities of a faithful Christian man in the church, as a husband and as a father.

OBJECTIVE: To help all recognize the responsibilities that God has given to men, to help each man endeavor to carry out those responsibilities faithfully, and to help each woman realize the tremendous responsibilities men have so that they will be supportive.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 1 Corinthians 11:2, 3 “Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

2. About the Text:

1) Paul praises the Corinthians for their obedience to the apostolic traditions which he gave to them.

2) However, there was a problem of authority in this congregation.

3) Paul sets forth the authority structure for the whole universe.

4) This does not reflect value, but authority.

5) It is, therefore, reflected within these verses that men are above women in the authority chain and as a result of this, they have added responsibility.

DISCUSSION: The Bible teaches that Christian manhood requires…

I.   Ecclesiastical Responsibilities–He must be a Christian Servant.

1. A faithful servant of God.

1) He reads and studies God’s word daily (Psalm 1:1ff).

2) He is faithful in attendance for all assemblies called by the elders of the church.

3) He is faithful in carrying out what he is asked to do.

4) He is faithful in using his talents in the service of the kingdom.

2. A faithful deacon in God’s church.

1) He is first and foremost a faithful Christian.

2) He recognizes the need to relieve. Acts 6:1-6

3) He recognizes that he is an official servant. 1 Tim.3:8-13

3. A faithful elder in God’s church.

1) He is first and foremost an example of faithful Christian manhood.

2) He recognizes the need to watch over the flock and bears that responsibility. Hebrews 13:17 “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”; Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”

3) He exhorts in sound doctrine, and convicts the gainsayer. Titus 1:5-9

4) But he does not “Lord” over the flock. 1 Peter 5:1-3 “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.”

II.  Connubial Responsibilities–He must be a Christian Husband

1. A faithful leader.

1) He is the head of the wife and the family. Ephesians 5:22-33.

2) He bears the responsibility for the direction of the family.

3) He is not an ogre, or a authoritarian. He leads in love.

2. A faithful husband.

1) He takes knowledge of his wife. 1 Peter 3:7 “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”

2) He loves his wife. Ephesians 5:22-33

3) He is faithful to his wife. Romans 7:1ff “Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.”; Hebrews 13:4 “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”

3. A faithful Christian friend. Tenderly affectioned toward her-Romans 12:9-16

4. Finally, the faithful example of Christian manhood has…

III. Parental Responsibilities–He must be a Christian Father

1. A faithful example. Abraham–Genesis 18:19 “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”

2. A faithful disciplinarian.

1) Ephesians 6:4 “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

2) Proverbs 13:24 “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.”

3. A faithful friend. Proverbs 18:24 “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”

CONCLUSION:

1. The faithful example of Christian manhood is faithful in his
