Respecting And Honoring Those Who Serve

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Most people respect service and those who serve. For example, we honor police officers who serve our communities. We pay homage to military personnel who serve our country.

But do we give the same honor and respect to those who are in an even greater service — those who dedicate their lives in service to God? Do we show respect and honor to our elders, deacons, preachers, Bible class teachers, and missionaries?

The Scriptures tell us to give honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13:7). In fact, it tells us that double honor goes to those who direct the affairs of the church through teaching and preaching (1 Timothy 5:17).

Some practical ways of demonstrating our gratitude and praise might be to:

  • Send a card or note of appreciation to our elders, deacons, preacher, and Bible class teacher.
  • Thank our Bible class teachers for Bible lessons that helped us better understand God’s word and gave us encouragement in our Christian walk.
  • Pray for our elders, deacons, preacher, and Bible class teacher by name for their efforts in teaching and preaching the gospel of Christ to those who are lost in sin.

Instead of criticizing our spiritual leaders, let them hear our words of gratitude and praise for their service. Let’s hold them up to God in prayer. God’s faithful servants deserve our respect and honor.
