Reluctant To Believe
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesIt’s a sad but true fact that people refuse to believe that which they don’t want to believe, no matter how much evidence is produced. For example, when explorers first went to Australia, they found a mammal which laid eggs; spent time both in water and on land; had a broad flat tail, webbed feet, and a bill similar to a duck.
Of course, we know this mammal today as the duck-billed platypus.
Upon their return to their point of origin in England, they told the populace of the evidence they had found, and everyone laughed and thought it was a hoax. The explorers then returned to Australia for a second trip, secured a duck-billed platypus pelt, and took it back to England as irrefutable evidence.
Once again, despite the evidence, the people still believed it was a hoax.
After reading the above account, the only logical conclusion that one can come to, is that these people disbelieved simply because they didn’t want to believe.
Sadly, some folks have this same mindset with regard to the Bible and its teachings (such as the reality of an eternal hell – see 2003 Harris Poll).
They are like the people in the above story about the duck-billed platypus — reluctant to believe, simply because they don’t want to believe.
Can so-called “religious” people be like that? (Acts 17:16-33; cf. Romans 1:14-22; Luke 16:19-31).
Let’s think about it!
