Sermon on Presumption

PROPOSITION: To set forth the sin of presumption.

OBJECTIVE: To help us avoid presumptuous sin.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Deuteronomy 17:12-13; Deut. 18:20-22.

2. Regarding the text:

1) The Old Testament was written for our learning, 1 Corinthians 10:11.

2) Many Old Testament passages set forth the vile sin of presuming.

3) One of the most beautiful is the words of David in Psalms 19:12,13.

4) To show that presumptuous sin is just as horrible in God’s sight today as it was in the Old Testament times, we read 2 Peter 2:10.

3. Reference to S.T.P.O.

DISCUSSION: There is “presumption”

I.   In Salvation – men presume:

1. Religious traditions are as good as God’s revelation, Matthew 15:9.

2. That pronouncements by worldly educated leaders are as good as God’s word,

3. Colossians 2:18-19.

4. That religious leaders pronouncements are equal to God’s law, 2 Peter 2:1-3.

5. That personal feelings are better than God’s word, 2 Corinthians 5:7; Proverbs 28:26; 14:12.

II.  In Worship – men presume:

1. Ignorance is ok, Acts 17:22-23 and 30;

2. Human tradition, Matthew 15:8-9;

3. Angels, Colossians 2:18, Revelation 22:8-9

4. Human will, Colossians 2:23

5. God has spoken, John 4:24.

6. God has remained silent, Hebrews 7:14; Leviticus 10:2.

7. This has application to generic and specific authority.

8. This must be applied to:

1) The Lord’s Supper;

2) Giving;

3) Teaching/learning situations;

4) Praying; and

5) Singing.

III. In Living – men presume:

1. God is a “man”, Psalm 50:21.

2. God does not see or know, Psalm 73:8-11, Psalm 44:20-21.

3. This is difficult because we tend to separate religion from life.

4. Separation of church & state is big in America today and is misunderstood.

5. No society can operate without moral rules, regulations and laws.

6. ALL morality comes from God!!!

7. This is where presumption sneaks in. We forget the source. Why?

1) We have different punishment for different crimes.

2) We see sin as of different levels.

3) We give lip-service to the idea that all sin is the same, but we don’t really believe it.

8. Some how, some way, by some means, we must come to understand that before God there is no difference between:

1) murder and drinking beverage alcohol;

2) fornication and tobacco use;

3) No difference between steeling and drug abuse;

4) NO DIFFERENCE!!!!!

9. Colossians 3:17 still, for everyday living, commands, “Quote.”

10.We are still under 1 Thessalonians 5:21.

11.God will judge us by his word, John 12:48.

12.We will be judged as surely for what we do on the job as for what we do in worship.

13.We will be judged as surely for our recreation as for our doctrine.

CONCLUSION: We must not be presumptuous in our salvation, worship, nor in our very life.
